** "Forty-one percent of MIT seniors we surveyed would choose a different major if they could go back to their freshman year. Wow! Let's think about that."
------------------------------------------------------------
Over the course of the semester, senior Andrea Meister and her team analyzed the issue of selecting a major for Designing the First Year at MIT (https://ovc.mit.edu/fye_course/?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) —a class aimed at tackling the ultimate problem set (http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/the-process-of-psetting?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) : how to make the first year at MIT better. Meister's group proposed a half-semester, 3-unit seminar for each major, in which students can explore the field and career options. Several ideas from the class are already being considered for implementation. Check out the findings from the other teams (http://news.mit.edu/2018/tackling-ultimate-problem-set-first-year-mit-0605?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) .
** New Major: Computer and Urban Science
------------------------------------------------------------
Starting this fall, a new major combining computer science and urban planning will focus on how urban scientists are making sense of cities and urban data in ways never before imagined—and using what they learn to reshape the world in real-time. The urban science major (https://dusp.mit.edu/news/mit-faculty-approves-new-urban-science-major?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) will incorporate urban planning and public policy, design and visualization, data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, pervasive sensor technology, robotics and other aspects of computer science and city planning. See our website for a full list (http://mitadmissions.org/discover/majors?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) of majors and minors.

** Hacking Virtual Reality
------------------------------------------------------------
We talk a lot about "mind and hand" at MIT. A great example of it is the hands-on humanities class Virtual Reality and Immersive Media Productions (https://www.hackingvr.mit.edu?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) in which students delve into the technical, philosophical and artistic dimensions of producing VR experiences. Projects this term (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4Qj3FSR6sl81lpnbgXOLCK1rppI9IXUq&utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) ranged from an interactive game where users work to unlock their chakras to a virtual tour of MIT. ** MIT is My Home
------------------------------------------------------------
In Selam G.'s first post ever (http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/home-sweet-college1?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) on the admissions blogs she talked about being a scared, homesick freshman, and how being away from home had really shaken her internal compass in a way she hadn't expected. Now, four years later, she says MIT has truly become her home. Read more about her journey in her final blog post (http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/mit-is-my-home?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) and join us in congratulating all of our newly graduated bloggers (http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/the-class-of-2018-graduates-from-mit?utm_source=Newsletter+Mailing+List+2018&utm_campaign=526f5a6867-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_04_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e8c603942d-526f5a6867-296414913) !
