Field hockey eye protection

ASL Field Hockey Families,

We are looking forward to a great season ahead, and likewise we are hoping you’ll come meet the field hockey coaches this evening.

I wanted to quickly send a message regarding eye protection.  It came to my attention that high school field hockey leagues in the United States mandate that students wear eye protection. I am aware that this is not a mandate in practically the rest of the world.

To me, when it comes to health and safety, it seems that best practice should be what we strive for.  Injuries can happen in practically any sport in any number of ways, and if we can proactively prevent certain ones from happening by use of protective equipment, it seems we should strive to do so.  That said, I’m aware that protection comes at a cost (and often an inconvenience!).  In this particular case of protective eyewear for field hockey, it would appear both of those factors (cost and convenience) are at play.  While I had wanted to make eye protection mandatory for this school year, I will not, given those factors.

Please know that we highly, highly encourage the use of eye protection (goggles), which the coaches will reference at Meet the Coaches.  Please note that we will insist on this sort of protection next school year.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  This is an exciting time for ASL field hockey with so many students out for our teams, a big schedule of games, and hosting 4 schools in the HS program from continental Europe.  To that end, please consider coming to Linford Christie Stadium this Saturday, as we host a 4 team HS hockey tournament, with teams from Brussels, The Hague, and right here in London.  We’ll send the schedule out in due course, but teams will play between 10 and 3pm.
