Hi Anna,

Northwestern is one of a handful of selective private universities (Cal. Tech., Dartmouth, Stanford, UChicago) on the Quarter System, which consists of three, 10-week academic terms each year (fall, winter, spring). The main advantage of the Quarter System is that it enables our students to take 10+ more courses over their undergraduate years than their peers at semester-based schools, and to pursue all sorts of interesting curricular combinations <http://admissions.northwestern.edu/academics/majors-minors/index.html>.

Another advantage is that our spring break falls between winter and spring quarters, which means our students get a week away from campus with zero coursework on their minds.

And they make this week count. Many go on Northwestern-funded programs, some earn extra spending money, others set out on a good old-fashioned road trip with friends, and of course plenty veg out at home with their families. Financial Aid is even available for students to participate in activities like Alternative Student Breaks <https://www.northwesternasb.com/>. Check out how some of the students on our admissions team spent their recent spring breaks:

I traveled to London alongside 15 other students for our global media class! I listened in on lectures at London School of Economics and met with Northwestern alumni at LinkedIn and Elle Magazine UK! —Natalie V., third year
Luckily all my finals took place during reading week <https://www.weinberg.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/courses-registration-grades/reading-period.html>, so I had two spring break plans! My family and I visited our relatives in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the first time in years. After flying back to the US, I visited NYC for the first time with Northwestern's Human Rights Club. —Isabel H., fourth year
I participated in NU DOCS <https://news.feinberg.northwestern.edu/2018/04/spring-break-outreach-program-hosts-future-medical-students/> at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. Feinberg faculty members mentored me and other students of color through a series of advising sessions, clinical experiences, and workshops that introduced us to various health fields. —Salma S., third year
We traveled to Poland on an Alternative Spring Break <https://www.northwesternasb.com/> with Northwestern Hillel <http://www.northwesternhillel.org/>! Centered in Krakow and Warsaw, we explored historical Judaism and its intersections with contemporary Polish life. —Carter L., second year & Lizbeth G., third year
This spring break I road-tripped through the South with all my best friends from my first year! We stopped in a Saint Louis, Memphis and New Orleans to name a few.—Juliette J., fourth year
I ran in the UNC Asheville Club Track Invitational with Northwestern's Track Club <https://sites.northwestern.edu/runners/>! We stayed in a cabin in Asheville, North Carolina. —Andrew M., third year
I stayed in Evanston for break and worked my on-campus job at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion to save up for fun post-graduation plans! —Amy A., fourth year
To get a perspective outside of Northwestern, my journalism class ("The Journey of the International Student") and I traveled to Shanghai, China where we practiced international journalism. The trip was an awesome mix between having real-world practice, traveling, and exploring a new country <https://admissions.northwestern.edu/academics/study-abroad.html>! —Ellie T., second year
I left the melting snow behind in Evanston and went be back home to Florida. I soaked up the sun and caught up on some leisure reading! —Kendyl C., first year
I ventured abroad to Singapore and Bali with friends from my hometown in Greece! —Stavros A., fourth year
I took a walk down memory lane and revisited London, where I studied abroad. I caught up with my former professors, saw shows on the West End, grabbed great bites at the markets, and visited the home office of the firm I'll be working at after graduation. —Daniel W., fourth year

We're lucky to have students here who engage with the world around them—whether or not classes are in session.

Regards,

Mike Mills
Associate Provost
