Dear Anna,
This is a LONG email - so please find some time to sit down and read it
through carefully. There is a lot of information and a list of things to
do.
We had a good meeting the other day to talk about your senior year and
college plans; I'm excited to work with you and your family over the next
year. This email is the follow up to our initial conversation, summarizing
what we started to discuss.
*First and foremost: this is a process. * Ask any senior right now and
they will tell you that where you are right now may not be where you end
up. Things change, plans change, ideas change. Nothing right now is set
in stone; we can revisit, revise and alter plans just about at any time.
- *Preliminary Schedule Ideas:*
- English
- Arabic IV
- Post AP Chinese
- AP Calc AB. AP Stats?
- AP Econ
- Human Rights Seminar? AP Euro? APES?
- You have completed your graduation requirements, with the exception of
English (1 credit).
- *Cumulative GPA* (ASL only, unweighted): 3.72
- *Standardized testing timeline*:
- *SAT Subject Tests* in June - WH, Chinese, USH?
- *ACT *in February and June
- *AP's: *English Language, USH, CalcAB, Bio. Retake AP Chinese?
- *Summer Plans: *
- Work experience at company in Milan and Shanghai
- Field Hockey camp?
- Perhaps a summer program? (See the summer list sent home)
- Politics at King's
<https://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/courses-data/modules/summer/pre-university-politics-s1.aspx>
- Economics at Cambridge
<https://www.immerse.education/our-programmes/cambridge-economics-summer-school-16-18/>
- International Relations at Cambridge
<https://www.immerse.education/our-programmes/cambridge-international-relations-summer-school-16-18/>
- This is a great combination for the summer
- *Beyond ASL: *University in the UK only.
- *Colleges/Universities you have explored (or would like to explore): *You
have explored many colleges in the US.
- You are focused on the UK currently. You would be interested in
other European universities.
- *Potential College/University Major/Program(s)*:
Politics/Economics/International
Relations and Chinese.
- *Potential Teacher Recommenders:* Ms. Xu, Ms. Jaworski
*TO DO*:
- *Waiver Form: Download this from your College Tasks in MAIA, fill it
out - parents need to sign it as well - and upload it.*
- *If you already have a preliminary list, add your
colleges/universities on MAIA in the "Colleges Considering" section.*
- *College Research Questions: Download this from your College Tasks in
MAIA. Use the questions as a guideline for all your research. Set a
spreadsheet up and start your college research - see below. Once you have
completed the four colleges' research share the spreadsheet with me,
please.*
- *Set up Family Meeting: Once you have shared your research
spreadsheet, consult with your parents and email me to suggest some times
for the Family Meeting.*
- * College Research: 4 from the colleges below for the Family Meeting* -
see below.
- *Register for ** Subject Tests in June - WH, USH. Practice them on
Kahn Academy*
- *Register for ACT in February and June with Accommodations*
- *Take advantage of the free SAT Subject Test evaluation at ESM Prep -
mentioned in this week's Weekly Bulletin.*
- *Sign up for AP English Language this spring and take the prep class.*
- *Should we discuss you retaking the AP Chinese exam?*
*Waiver Form:* This form allows ASL to send all your materials to
college. Please waive your rights to see your recommendations; this is
standard practice and colleges will not read recommendations where rights
have not been waived. I read and check all teacher recommendations before
they are sent. If you have any questions about this, email me or pop in to
see me.
*College Research: Use the questions to guide you in good, thorough
research. *Between now and the fall, aside from continuing to do well in
school, finalizing your testing, and continuing to pursue your
extracurricular interests, your college research/list should be your top
priority, as far as the college process goes.
In addition to the ones already on your list, I’d like to suggest some
schools for you to consider and research in preparation for our Family
Meeting. *Of the list below, I would like you to research at least FOUR
(4) and pick TWO (2) to present at our Family Meeting. * You will start the
meeting with your research.
When you research UK universities, pay attention to the AP/Subject Test/ACT
score requirements for each program.
*International Relations and Chinese*
Nottingham Trent University
Goldsmith's University
SOAS
Manchester Metropolitan
*Economics and Chinese*
Edinburgh
SOAS
Warwick
*Politics and Chinese*
Lancaster (with placement year)
U. Manchester
SOAS
If you would like to investigate Irish universities, start here
<https://www.educationinireland.com/en/What-can-I-study-/>:
I have added these colleges to your MAIA list, taking into consideration
the preferences you shared with me in our initial meeting: I’d also like to
expose you to a few schools that are not on your preliminary list. *Don’t
be alarmed if my suggestions don’t fit your preferences at all! *T*hese
suggestions are simply meant to open you up to different possibilities,
primarily, different types of colleges, programs, etc.. *
*Use the College Research questions downloaded from MAIA, set up a
spreadsheet of your own, share it with me and fill in your research. * Remember
that we are considering and building a well-balanced list of reaches,
50:50's and probable schools. Many students change their minds several
times during this process, before finalizing the list in the fall. And
that’s okay!
The research questions are meant to help you move past more superficial
factors like rank or "I heard that ...," and instead, find out about things
that might actually affect *your* experience as a student at a given school
(e.g. campus culture, campus/extracurricular life, residential life,
surrounding environment, quality of the academic program, success of the
college’s graduates, etc.). Ultimately, the most important part of this
process is finding the right match for YOU, and no-one else. Remember:
doing good research now will make next fall's essay writing easier.
*Family Meeting:* *Once you have shared your research spreadsheet with
the two colleges' research that you plan to present on it, consult with
your parents and email me to suggest some times for the Family
Meeting. *During
the meeting, we will begin making a game plan for the rest of the school
year and summer, but most importantly, we’ll spend some time talking about
your colleges, and the research that you need to do to make your final list
carefully chosen for fit and your applications well-written and
compelling.
I am excited to be on this journey with you. Please don't hesitate to stop
by or email me with any questions, ideas and/or concerns.
All the best,
Mrs. R.
