Time to update Mrs. R.! Time to share those essay drafts!

Dear Mrs. R's seniors,

It's really hot in London this week, and so probably not the best time to
be thinking of cool autumn days and looming applications. ☀

*However, this is an oh-so-gentle reminder that if you haven't done so
already, now is the time to tap some words onto a screen and begin working
on essays/statements, whether for the US, UK or beyond*. *Please start a
Google Doc and share it with me.*

*A couple of hints:*

1. Don't worry about word length. Just write, and write some more. I
will help you edit it down. If there were PhD's in cutting college essays
down to size, I would have one!

2. This will take a couple of drafts until it feels right. It will not
come out perfectly at the beginning. In fact and often, when you start,
you don't find your opening until the third or fourth paragraph.

3. Tell stories and anecdotes that illustrate the points that you are
trying to make.

4. Don't be too formal, don't write like a 40-yr-old PhD candidate. This
*has* to be in your own voice - it is a PERSONAL essay.

5. *For the US*, do NOT rehash your resume as an essay. You will have a
chance to highlight all your activities and resume elsewhere in your
applications.

6. *If you are writing the personal statement for UCAS*, focus on your
chosen programme and speak only to your interests and support for that
programme. Mention Activities *only* when they highlight a skill that it
is important for your chosen field.

7. Put all your essays into ONE Google Doc instead of having multiple
documents.

8. *Finally, if you need help getting started or want some help with
directions, just email me. *

*Look for another communication from our office on August 1st for those of
you who need to rollover your Common Application. The UC application will
also open on August 1st.* And remember, that instructions for the Common
App - including how to rollover - are also downloadable from your dashboard
in MAIA on your Common App Tip Sheet.

All the very best,
Mrs. R.
