ASL Alternatives Update

Dear parents,

As we near the halfway mark of this year's Alternatives trips, I'm touching
base with a couple thoughts and reminders.

First, I want to share some information we presented to students through
advisory earlier this year. I've relayed many of these details to you
already, but wanted to make sure everyone has the opportunity to better
understand the program in which your students are participating.

I've attached a short presentation summarizing some of the work a HS
committee undertook, evaluating and re-envisioning what Alternatives might
look like at ASL. Taking input from faculty, students and parents, the
committee updated the Alternatives philosophy statement, then created four
strands to which Alternatives could be aligned. These strands help us track
and possibly guide a student's journey through Alternatives while at ASL.
The committee also suggested a few major changes for this year, including
moving the trips to March and adding some time in the fall for groups to
immerse in their areas of interest and prepare for the spring travel
experience.

Later in the year, we will give students, parents and faculty the
opportunity to provide feedback on Alternatives, including how the changes
have felt for families who were here in previous years.

In the meantime, I hope your students return on Thursday inspired, provoked
and excited about what they've learned on Alternatives this year. And I
hope the upcoming long weekend gives them a chance to rest and reflect
before school on Monday.

Please remember that all students are expected to return to ASL on Thursday
evening; however, if it's more convenient for students to leave the group
once in central London and travel home directly, they may do so, provided
parents email permission to the trip leader. Students wanting to leave
their group directly from an airport must be picked up in person by a
trusted adult or family member.
