The CODE Revision Skills Course:
An interview with Co-director Paula Barrett
Paula Barrett is a specialised career tutor and has worked in the education industry for around 12 years, originally training in Child Psychology and beginning her career in the neuro-developmental clinic at The Royal Free Hospital. Paula has worked in Europe, Asia, the US and the Middle East as both a tutor and an educational consultant
Paula is also a fully trained senior executive function Coach at Connections in Mind.
How would you summarise your revision course?
Our course runs for 3 days and equips students with a variety of revision and exam skills. Amongst other things we look at effective revision methods, how to approach and plan revision as well as how to increase motivation and reduce procrastination. The groups are kept small with 2 experienced facilitators (myself included) and each student will get extensive resources to take home. We are proud to say the feedback has been fantastic so far.
Do your course facilitators have experience working with children with special educational needs?
Yes, both facilitators have worked for years with educational psychologists to develop programmes designed to enhance learning for children with SEN. We are also both trained executive function coaches so have a broad knowledge of neurodevelopmental issues and how to adapt the curriculum to suit the different learning styles of these children.
Is group learning for revision effective?
Yes, our students get plenty of attention as we keep the group sizes small with a low student to facilitator ratio. We find that student’s engagement remains high as we have reflective discussions and include group activities to help them to internalise what we are delivering. We also find our students often find it motivating to be in an environment with other children of a similar mindset working to change the way they approach revision.
It is possible to make a change in 3 days?
Although no turn around is immediate, we do see a change in attitude as learning a different approach to studying can give a lease of life to revision. We often see students feel inspired to be shown engaging ways to break down revision into manageable chunks.
How will students remember what they have been shown?
We do recognise it is hard to remember all the content so we give students an extensive folder that covers all the course material. We will also generate a report that gives personalised recommendations and action points for each child. This can help the child and any adult supporting them to continue to implement the course content. We also offer a private tuition service for those who want continuity and further sessions relating to these skills.
What has the feedback been like?
It has been brilliant. We have had children tell us that for the first time ever it all seems manageable and it has been pleasing to hear parents report back that there has been lasting change at home. One parent recently commented that apart from some ‘serious revision’ being done she did not once have to prompt her child to get out of bed to attend the course which was ‘a big deal’ in their house.
Will this content already be covered in school or by existing tuition?
It is very hard for schools to address correct revision techniques when there is so much content to get through and such a large group of students to work with. Our focus is more on approach rather than content of the subjects. We show children how to plan, structure and manage their time and how to focus and tackle obstacles such as procrastination. We have smaller classes than schools meaning that we can personalise and engage our students closely with the content.
How do you know which revision and exam skills work?
We use the latest research in child education, brain development and learning to put together our approach. We have both tutored internationally for many years so also include our tried and tested approaches and share our formulas for success with students. We also believe that teaching children about their own cognitions and learning is key to getting them motivated.
