Dear Anna,

Each fall, I say to our newest students, "Welcome to the greatest college in the greatest university in the greatest city in the world." I truly believe this to be true because Columbia College <http://www.college.columbia.edu/> is an unparalleled institution in the city of New York, rooted in its century-old Core Curriculum <http://www.college.columbia.edu/core/> and filled with innovative programs, inquisitive students and endless opportunities. I hope that you will consider applying to Columbia College and joining our community of amazingly creative and intellectually fearless undergraduates.

My road to Columbia College started in a tiny coal mining community in Appalachia, where my high school graduating class of 24 students was about the same size as a Columbia Core course. I was the first in my family to attend college, went on to get advanced degrees in chemistry and eventually arrived in Morningside Heights as a professor of chemistry. Today, my responsibility is to make sure that I support the amazing students of Columbia College and the faculty who teach them in every way possible.

Many things make Columbia College special, but the Core is the most special among them -- it is the identity of Columbia College and the expression of our ideals. The Core is a collection of courses -- Literature Humanities; Contemporary Civilization; Music Humanities; Art Humanities; Frontiers of Science; and the Global Core -- that encourage students to ask questions, to wrestle with enduring themes and to reflect on the experiences that define every Columbia graduate. The Core promotes independent, innovative thinking and prepares students to pursue intensive study in more than 100 majors and concentrations, to participate in countless opportunities for global engagement, to do cutting-edge scientific research or to secure an internship in the field that is right for you.

I always tell our students that the Columbia experience is a journey. Every choice they make -- every class, extracurricular activity, internship, research experience, conversation and interaction -- helps our students grow personally, professionally and as a citizen of the world.

By applying to Columbia College <http://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/apply/first-year>, you could be part of that journey--bringing your ideas to our classrooms and participating in the critical, world-changing dialogue that takes place every day on our campus. At Columbia College, you can have an unmatched liberal arts education, the resources of a world-class research university and the opportunities and excitement of living in New York City -- an experience that no other institution can provide.

Sincerely,

James J. Valentini
Dean of Columbia College and
Vice President for Undergraduate Education
