Council updates
Shop Local Week (10-16 August): It's Shop Local Week and now's the best time to support your local shops, restaurants and businesses to help our high streets bounce back and rebuild from the coronavirus pandemic.
Many local shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes in Westminster have brought in a wide range of safety measures, such as plastic partitions at tills, contactless payments and hand sanitiser stations to protect customers.

See the sights without the crowds: We've launched our new campaign called #SightseeCrowdFree (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/sightseecrowdfree?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=01e638e362-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-01e638e362-40059651) - to encourage people to enjoy the crowd free West End like you’ve never seen it before.
Cllr Rachael Robathan, Leader of Westminster City Council, said: “Numbers are still low but are steadily returning, and we see that trend intensifying when the peak holiday period ends and office workers return in increasing numbers in September.
“We believe this is a historic window to see one of the most famous cities on earth without the normal crowds - you have room to view and no queue. People in foreign cities will often pay extra to get up early to go on private tours to dodge the crowds - in Westminster you have a chance to do that for free before the crowds return in the autumn.

“The temporary closures of large numbers of streets to allow temporary tables and chairs mean you can dine al fresco for the next few weeks.”
If you're out and about in the West End, why not get involved in our campaign and take your Instagram moments at key attractions and post them under the #SightseeCrowdFree hashtag. Community halls available for booking: We are reopening our 12 community halls and spaces for bookings and use, gradually from this week after they closed in April due to the pandemic. New risk assessments are complete, and we have installed signage to ensure that social distancing is maintained when the spaces are in use. Hand sanitiser is also available for use.
Non-exercise activities such as prayer groups, youth groups and workshops, are encouraged, in line with government guidance, which restricts the types of activities allowed. We will assess new bookings case by case. STOPPING THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS: The most important thing you can do to protect yourself and others is to:
* wash your hands more often than usual for 20 seconds
* cover your mouth and nose when in places where it’s hard to stay away from other people you do not normally meet
* keep your distance
Stay at home and book a test if you have any of the following:
* a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
* a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
* a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal
HYDE PARK MOBILE TESTING UNIT: Returns Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th August from 10.30am to 3:30pm. Enter through Victoria Gate and the unit can be found on North Carriage Drive.
You can ask for a test through the NHS (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/get-an-antigen-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=01e638e362-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-01e638e362-40059651) or by calling NHS 119. You must book to attend, please do not turn up without an appointment. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email or text telling you the time to attend. You should not use public transport to attend the test. If you travel on foot, please observe social distancing at all times.
