Dear Grade 12 Parents and Guardians,

As you have seen in your Dean's email this week and in the email sent out
by Administration, there will be a meeting this coming Monday, 3 February
at 7pm in the Learning Commons. This informational meeting will address
the standards-based assessment and grading pilot program in the social
studies and world languages departments.

This is an important opportunity for our parent community to clarify the
objectives of the program. Your presence and feedback will
be valuable and we encourage you to attend this meeting to hear
from administration and address any questions you might have.

We transcribe a message sent out by Devan and Nathalie earlier about this
topic (and others) below.

Best,

Dear Families,

As you may be aware, certain courses in our high school social studies and
world languages departments are part of a pilot program in which student
progress is reported in alignment with a standards-based assessment system
based on growth. Students in Grades 9 -11 have received a Semester
I in-progress grade that reflects learning in relationship to year-end
learning goals. As a result, these in-progress grades may be lower than the
year-end grade, which will ultimately replace the current Semester 1 grade;
however, given the importance of Semester I grades to the application
process for summer programs or other secondary schools, we will offer two
options to support students’ current needs.

If your child is in one of the classes in the pilot program and you need to
request a transcript before the end of the current school year, you and
your child have the following two options:

· The in-progress grade may remain as currently reported; or

· The in-progress grade can be changed to reflect a “Pass” until
the year-end grade is available. For those choosing the “Pass” option, we
will include an explanation of the pilot program assessment system.

The process for requesting a transcript for a summer program or when
applying to a different institution remains the same. Please contact
Registrar Grace Conteh (grace_conteh at asl.org) to request a transcript,
clearly stating in your email which option you wish to choose for the
classes below. If a preference is not stated, the transcript will be sent
with the in-progress grade, plus the explanatory language.

On Monday, 3 February, at 7 pm, in the Learning Commons, we will host an
informational meeting about the standards-based assessment and grading
pilot program in the social studies and world languages departments. All
families and students are invited to learn more about how this approach
supports student growth.

The pilot program includes the following courses:

· World Civilizations II

· Arabic I, II, III, IV

· US History

· Chinese II, III, IV, V

· AP US History

· French I, II

· AP Human Geography

· Spanish III

· Human Rights Seminar

Warm regards,

Devan Ganeshananthan and Natalie Jaworski
