This weekend sees the reopening of much of Westminster’s hospitality sector, as well as many of our libraries, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. We are excited to see places safely welcome back customers and residents enjoying our services and spaces.

We spoke to The Orange House Pub and Restaurant in Belgravia about the plans they have in place to safely reopen again, as they welcome the public back.
Westminster’s pubs and restaurants reopen: This weekend, as lockdown eases, the bars restaurants and pubs will start to reopen across Westminster. Much of the West End will be transformed into a ’continental style’ outdoor dining district, with some roads closing for parts of the day to allow for more space for tables and chairs. Read about all our plans and supporting information here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/reopening-westminsters-hospitality-sector?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .

In the run-up to the reopening of the hospitality sector Leader of Westminster City Council, Cllr Rachael Robathan, and Cllr Matthew Green, Cabinet Member for Business and Planning, have been out and about visiting local businesses and showing their support.
Shop Local: If you are out shopping this weekend, don’t forget to check out the local shops and businesses in Westminster. We’ve created an interactive map which showcases all the local businesses that are open in your area with social distance measures in place. We have more than 400 businesses on the map ranging from local cafes, delis, bars, restaurants, book shops and clothes stores to name a few. To start shopping local and support your local businesses, visit our Shop Local webpage (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/shop-local?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .
Playgrounds and outdoor gyms: From Saturday 4 July, our playgrounds and outdoor gyms will reopen. Facilities will be cleaned more regularly and have additional signage, to remind users how they can help to ensure these facilities stay safe and open.
It is still recommended to stay at least 2 metres apart where possible and follow good hygiene practice. In situations where that isn’t possible - people should follow the ‘1-metre-plus’ approach, taking more precautions such as wearing face coverings, facing away from each other, increased hand hygiene and minimising the amount of time in contact with each other as much as possible. Please follow the guidance provided at each site to keep yourself and others safe.
Libraries and Archives Centre: Our Libraries and the Archives Centre are reopening in line with government guidance with heightened hygiene and social distancing measures in place to ensure residents can safely enjoy all that our libraries have to offer.
Four sites - Charing Cross, Church Street, Paddington and Victoria – will reopen on Saturday 4 July, and safety measures will include:
* hand sanitiser at the entrance and in other key areas of the libraries
* Perspex screens at enquiry desks
* floor marking to direct flow and aid with social distancing
* limits on visitor numbers at any one time

Westminster City Council key updates
Major works restart across Westminster: As the city continues to reopen, major works have restarted with new COVID-19 safety measures in place. Seven projects across five sites have restarted and to mark this milestone, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Housing Services, Cllr David Harvey, visited Little Venice Towers on Thursday 2 July (pictured below). The six high-rise residential buildings are in the final stages of getting new sustainable insulation installed, after previous cladding was taken off in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy. The new insulation, called External Wall Insulation (EWI), was chosen as a replacement by residents during a consultation. Read more here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/major-works-restart-across-westminster-housing?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .
We contacted all residents about the works in advance with information on the work we will do and how we will ensure their safety at all times using the government ‘COVID-19 Secure’ guidance (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/homes?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) . Some other types of non-urgent repairs and planned major works remain on hold for now and will restart once we can manage more safely. Read our plans here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/yourhousing/news/restarting-repairs-and-major-works-safely?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .
Celebrating the South West: The annual SouthWestFest is returning to Westminster in an exciting digital-only format. From 6-12 July, this week-long ‘Digital Festival’ is celebrating all the ways south Westminster’s residents can keep together while staying apart. An eclectic mixture of events all form an exciting programme celebrating the region’s talent, organisations and community spirit.
Full details on the event, including a complete list of activities and all the details on how to join in the fun, are available on the SouthWestFest website: southwestfest.org.uk (https://southwestfest.org.uk/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651)
Public Health updates
Local lockdown: Following reports this week that a number of areas across England – including Westminster – could be put into a local lockdown, our Interim Director of Public Health, Houda Al-Sharifi confirms that this is currently not the case:
“There are currently very low numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in our city and this situation has remained stable over the past four weeks. We are closely monitoring the local and national situation and continue to work closely with Public Health England and the NHS to help prevent any spread of the virus in our city.
As lockdown is eased, we would expect weekly fluctuations in cases of coronavirus, but there are currently absolutely no plans for a local lockdown in Westminster.
We would encourage everyone to continue to follow Government guidelines on social distancing, washing their hands, and wearing face coverings. If you are displaying symptoms of the virus, please stay at home and immediately book a test through NHS Test and Trace.”
For the latest information and access to the latest number of coronavirus cases in Westminster, please visit our Test and Trace webpage (http://www.westminster.gov.uk/test-and-trace?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .

NHS Test and Trace: What you need to know and do
NHS Test and Trace: As our city starts to reopen, NHS Test and Trace will help to reduce the spread of coronavirus and contain and stop outbreaks. It will help the NHS to keep the rate of reproduction – the ‘R’ number – below 1 so that the Council can continue to support the safe reopening of our city.
This week, we launched a dedicated hub with all the information you will need to know about Test and Trace (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/test-and-trace?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) , including our local Outbreak Plan.
Mobile testing unit: The coronavirus mobile testing unit returns to Hyde Park on Tuesday 7 July and Wednesday 8 July from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Enter through Victoria Gate and the unit can be found on North Carriage Drive.
You can ask for a test:
* for yourself – if you have coronavirus symptoms (a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste)
* for someone you live with – if they have coronavirus symptoms
You can ask for a test through the NHS (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/get-an-antigen-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) or by calling NHS 119. You must book to attend, please do not turn up without an appointment. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email or text telling you the time to attend. You should not use public transport to attend the test. If you travel on foot, please observe social distancing at all times.
If you are an essential worker, or live with an essential worker, and have coronavirus symptoms, you should apply for a coronavirus test on GOV.UK (https://www.gov.uk/apply-coronavirus-test-essential-workers?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=9feb47370b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-9feb47370b-40042831&utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .
STOPPING THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS: We all have a role to play in stopping the spread of coronavirus. To protect yourself and others, please read the NHS’s advice on social distancing (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/social-distancing/what-you-need-to-do/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) .
Do not leave your home if you have any of the following:
* a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
* a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
* a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal
If you have one or more symptoms of coronavirus, you must ask for a test through the NHS website (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/ask-for-a-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a00ecc4a27-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a00ecc4a27-40059651) or by calling 119. Testing is available for people of all ages.
