EAT AND DRINK LOCAL THIS SUMMER: By choosing to eat and drink locally (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/shop-local-eat-local?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) you’re helping the local businesses in your area to get back on their feet and thrive again.
Many businesses have reopened with social distancing measures in place. We met with the manager at Harry Morgan’s Restaurant & Deli in St John’s Wood High Street who told us about the efforts they’ve been making to keep things safe for their customers. He also spoke about their new al fresco dining option – part of the Council’s table and chairs licensing measures that are helping support restaurants to reopen.
If you’re planning to visit the restaurants, pubs and bars in Westminster, please remember to plan and book ahead, and continue to follow social distancing guidance. Don’t forget to find your local Eat Out to Help Out businesses (https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/eat-out-to-help-out/find-a-restaurant?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) for money off your food and non-alcoholic drinks. EID MUBARAK: Communities working together to overcome coronavirus was the theme as the Leader of Westminster City Council, Cllr Rachael Robathan, spoke to the congregation at the Sherbourne House Community and Prayer centre in Pimlico today. The leader spoke to 30 members of the congregation, with worshippers arriving every hour in staged visits to mark Eid Al Adha, which follows the traditional pilgrimage to Mecca.
On our website, you can find signposting to resources for Eid and available support, along with messages of reassurance from the Leader and Dr Ahmad Makhdoom, Regional Director of the Muslim World League in London. Our Interim Director of Public Health, Houda Al-Sharifi, has also offered some advice on how to safely enjoy Eid Al Adha. NEW CARE HOME IN MAIDA VALE: On Wednesday, Cllr Rachael Robathan, visited a brand new state-of-the-art care home being developed in Maida Vale to see the progress of the final stages of building work. Beachcroft House, which is being delivered by construction company Durkan, will provide more than 80 new, modern, self-contained homes along with shared lounges, dining rooms and quiet areas for residents to use and enjoy.
Despite construction challenges faced by the pandemic, Beachcroft House and The Masefield - a private housing block on the same site - are nearly complete and should be open in the autumn.
Cllr Robathan said: “Beachcroft House is an innovative, high-quality development for our most vulnerable residents, incorporating state-of-the-art learning to support even those living with advanced dementia. It is something of which we can all be really proud.”
COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION FUND EXTENDED: The City of Westminster Charitable Trust Community Contribution Fund deadline has been extended until Friday 15 August and we encourage local voluntary and community organisations, registered charities, social enterprises, schools and not-for-profit companies to apply for grants of up to £25,000. NEW ADULT EDUCATION COURSES: Enrolment for Westminster Adult Education Service (WAES) courses is now open.
Starting in September, these courses include free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). For beginner students all the way up to those at more advanced levels, the courses are conducted by fully-qualified teaching staff who will be on hand to help students develop their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Having these skills can lead to recognised qualifications.
Improving your English can not only help individuals to better communicate, but also lead to improved career prospects and social integration. WAES courses are currently being conducted online, however classes will return to their physical sites as soon as it is safe to do so. GET BACK TO BETTER HEALTH: Did you know that nearly two thirds of adults in the UK are overweight or living with obesity?
Better Health is a new adult health campaign from Public Health England that provides an opportunity for the nation to reset and introduce healthy changes. For many, the past few months have been a wake-up call, with people realising how precious their health is and recognising that it is time to get back on track.
For help and support to lose weight, visit www.nhs.uk/BetterHealth.
CHANGES TO SELF-ISOLATION ADVICE: The Chief Medical Officers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have updated the self-isolation advice for anyone who has symptoms of, or confirmed cases of COVID-19. Previously, the advice was to stay at home for 7 days if you have a positive result or have symptoms of the virus. This has now been updated to 10 days.
Although it’s still limited, stronger evidence shows that people with COVID-19 who are mildly ill and recovering from the virus have a low but real possibility of being able to infect others between 7 and 9 days after becoming ill with the virus.
Please book a test and stay at home for 10 days if you develop symptoms of coronavirus. Click here for more information (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/test-and-trace?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) .
MOBILE TESTING UNIT: The coronavirus mobile testing unit returns to Hyde Park on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th August from 10.30am to 3:30pm. Enter through Victoria Gate and the unit can be found on North Carriage Drive. You can ask for a test:
* for yourself – if you have coronavirus symptoms (a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste)
* for someone you live with – if they have coronavirus symptoms
You can ask for a test through the NHS (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/get-an-antigen-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) or by calling NHS 119. You must book to attend, please do not turn up without an appointment. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email or text telling you the time to attend. You should not use public transport to attend the test. If you travel on foot, please observe social distancing at all times.
If you are an essential worker, or live with an essential worker, and have coronavirus symptoms, you should apply for a coronavirus test on GOV.UK (https://www.gov.uk/apply-coronavirus-test-essential-workers?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) .
STOPPING THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS: We all have a role to play in stopping the spread of coronavirus. To protect yourself and others, please read the NHS’s advice on social distancing (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/social-distancing/what-you-need-to-do/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) .
Stay at home and book a test if you have any of the following:
* a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
* a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
* a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal
If you have one or more symptoms of coronavirus, you must ask for a test through the NHS website (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/ask-for-a-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=aa1429f97e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-aa1429f97e-40059651) or by calling 119. Testing is available for people of all ages.
