Nobel Prize for Renowned Yale Poet

The Yale community is celebrating the news that Louise Glück has been awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature <https://news.yale.edu/2020/10/08/louise-gluck-awarded-2020-nobel-prize-literature>. Glück has also been recognized with the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and National Humanities Medal. She served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2003 to 2004. At Yale, Glück is the Rosenkranz Writer-in-Residence and teaches two undergraduate poetry classes: Introduction to Verse Writing and Advanced Verse Writing.

Glück joins other recent Nobel Laureates on the Yale faculty, including environmental economist William Nordhaus <https://news.yale.edu/2018/10/08/yales-william-nordhaus-wins-2018-nobel-prize-economic-sciences> (Economics, 2018), molecular biologist Jim Rothman <https://news.yale.edu/2013/10/07/yale-s-james-rothman-shares-2013-nobel-prize-physiology-or-medicine> (Medicine or Physiology, 2013), and economist and author Robert Shiller <https://news.yale.edu/2013/10/14/another-yale-nobel-robert-shiller> (Economics, 2013). Like all tenured Yale faculty, they also teach undergraduate courses.

Reflecting on today's news, Yale college senior Lucy Silbaugh said, "I'll never stop feeling lucky that I got to have Louise as a mentor and teacher. Her literary genius is obviously undeniable — but I think her talent for teaching is equally undeniable." Another of Glück's undergraduate students, Eliana Rose Swerdlow, wrote, "Just yesterday, I sat in the library courtyard and talked on the phone with Louise about a few poems I had mailed her...Louise's commitment to me inspires me to show the same dedication to my poetry."
