GAINING EXPERIENCE AT OUR VACCINE CENTRES: The council and local NHS have partnered to offer supportive work opportunities for volunteers with special educational needs and disabilities at COVID-19 centres in the city.
Hussain, a local resident with a learning disability, recently graduated from the council’s Supported Internship Programme and volunteers every Monday at the Stowe Centre, an NHS vaccination centre in Harrow Road.
Hussain has become a popular member of the team, supporting with registrations and welcoming patients. Hussain said, “I really like helping at the Stowe Centre because I feel like I am helping the community with the vaccines. I am learning new skills and I like meeting people.”

CANCER WON’T WAIT: Since the start of the pandemic the number of people taking up cancer screening appointments and attending their referral appointments has markedly dropped. The NHS is asking people to come forward (https://www.nwlondonccg.nhs.uk/services/your-health/cancer) for screening when invited and to speak to their GP if they notice any unusual changes in their body without delay.
Whether you or a loved one has a routine appointment, or a potential cancer symptom, the message is clear – you are not a burden, we are here to safely care for you so please don’t delay. Come forward as you usually would. Cancer won’t wait (https://www.nwlondonccg.nhs.uk/services/your-health/cancer) .

HELP FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE IN WESTMINSTER: This week, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a stark warning (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-58130705) that human activity is changing the climate in unprecedented and sometimes irreversible ways, bringing increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding.
Urgent action is needed now. In Westminster, we are committed to reaching net-zero by 2040 and working in a myriad of ways to help achieve this, from decarbonising buildings to supporting more sustainable travel. What more can we do to help communities and businesses tackle climate change? Help inform our climate action plan by taking our short survey – now extended until 23 August: Have your say now (https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/westminsterclimatechange/) .

ADDRESSING ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: We’ve recently organised several events across our estates to build awareness of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), including walkabouts and a weapons sweep around the Amberley Estate in conjunction with the police (pictured above). Walkabouts identify ways in which we can reduce ASB, such as removing benches or adding extra lighting to specific areas. We also engage with young people on our estates and encourage them to use community services such as the Amberley Youth Club.
