THE MAESTRO: FURTWÄNGLER AND THE NAZIS,
26 FEBRUARY, 7PM

In his play Taking Sides Ronald Harwood, The Dresser playwright and Oscar-winner for The Pianist, dramatises the great conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler’s 'denazification'. This forms the inspiration for our latest specially commissioned production from Tristram Powell (Talking Heads) & Honor Borwick (The Favourite).  Previous script-in-hand performances, celebrating Harold Pinter, Dorothy Parker, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and Arthur Schnitzler, have featured Alison Steadman, Toby Jones, Celia Imrie and Kenneth Cranham; a surprise star cast for this special event will be announced nearer the time.

ISY SUTTIE, 27 FEBRUARY, 8PM

After finding fame as Dobby in Peep Show, Sony Gold for her Radio 4 series Pearl & Dave and acclaim for her memoir The Actual One, comedian and actress Isy Suttie has now written her first novel. Described as “very funny and utterly charming…tremendous” by Adam Kay, Jane is Trying sees her eponymous heroine takes on everything from moving back in with her parents, anxiety and book events. One of our most hilarious writers and performers discusses her life and career to date.

One of our series of online-only events during Jewish Book Week 2022, Harvard Professor Emerita Ruth Wisse joins us live from the US to discuss her controversial new memoir with Sunday Times special correspondent Josh Glancy, from taking on the American Jewish establishment and their response to antisemitic violence, to encounters with Saul Bellow, Leonard Cohen & many more.
