DIGITAL FUTURES: More than 1,000 devices have now been delivered to children across Westminster as part of the Digital Futures scheme (in partnership with the Young Westminster Foundation), to make sure no child in Westminster falls behind with their school work. We directly funded the purchase of 750 digital devices, with further devices being donated by Vodafone and Westminster Housing. An estimated 2,000 more laptops have also been distributed to Westminster schools directly from the Department for Education, and in total more than 4,000 devices have been distributed from all sources in the scheme.

If your child doesn’t have access to a digital device or an internet connection, they can continue to attend school in Westminster during the national lockdown and access online learning materials at Westminster library computers. Find out more about who is eligible to attend school during the lockdown here (http://www.westminster.gov.uk/coronavirus-advice-residents?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=43f8e9a61b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-43f8e9a61b-40059651#school) and about our library opening hours here (http://www.westminster.gov.uk/libraries?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=43f8e9a61b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-43f8e9a61b-40059651) .

OXFORD STREET IMPROVEMENT PLANS: We have published plans for temporary improvements to Oxford Street that will support the safe and socially-distanced return of visitors once restrictions are eased. The temporary interventions that have been proposed, and are planned to be delivered by spring this year, could reinvigorate and reimagine the nation’s high street when we emerge from lockdown. The proposals include increased footway space on Oxford Street and more greenery.

We’re inviting everyone to take a look at our improvement plans and to share their views. You can find more information by clicking here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/Oxford-street-district?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=43f8e9a61b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-43f8e9a61b-40059651) .

DON’T STRUGGLE ALONE WITH YOUR MENTAL HEALTH: If you are, or you know of a young person experiencing low moods, anxiety, sadness, isolation or any other form of mental health illness, then please let them know that they’re not alone.

The council supports Kooth’s services, offering a welcoming space for effective mental health support for children and young people. Whether they may need to have a friendly chat with a professional, join an active and supportive online community or help with developing positive habits that can boost their wellbeing, such as journaling – Kooth offers the right services.

There are many things we can all do alone, but dealing with our mental health should not be one of them.

STAYING CREATIVE DURING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK: There are many ways to help a child or young person process their emotions during lockdown. With this year’s theme for Children’s Mental Health Week looking at ways to Express Yourself, we asked our friends at DreamArts to recommend a creative activity to do at home. Their suggestion – a Growth Tree – can be created using some old newspapers and decorated with anything found around the house.

Check out what participants created during a pre-lockdown DreamArts workshop (https://www.facebook.com/DreamArtsLondonWestminster/videos/758928141418742?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=43f8e9a61b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-43f8e9a61b-40059651) .

CALLING ALL LANDLORDS AND TENANTS: Are you the landlord or tenant of a shared house or flat in Westminster? The council is proposing an additional licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) and we want to hear what you think.

Additional licensing would apply to more types of shared homes, including houses and flats, bedsits and student accommodation, as well as some buildings converted into flats.

The proposal comes after a review showed that HMOs were more likely to be in poorer condition, often housing the most vulnerable tenants. It aims to help improve conditions for people living in the private rented sector.

The consultation has been extended to 18 February.

LGBT HISTORY MONTH – A TALK WITH RICHARD BRUCE PARKINSON: LGBTQ+ desire and identity are embodied in human artefacts across all periods and cultures from world history – from Ancient Egypt to works by contemporary artists such as David Hockney.

This lecture will discuss the evolution of a long-term LGBTQ+ world history project taking place at the British Museum in a variety of formats, including the ground-breaking 2013 book A Little Gay History and subsequent exhibitions and trails. It will consider why LGBTQ+ histories are important and how they are best displayed – as temporary interventions or as integrated parts of permanent displays – and reflect on the role of historians in presenting this heritage and in upholding human rights.

The first part of this event is a pre-recorded talk followed by a live Q&A with Richard Bruce Parkinson. You will have the opportunity to submit questions in writing via the Q&A live chat.
