CELEBRATING CHINESE NEW YEAR: Today marks the start of Year of the Ox! Lockdown means we can’t celebrate Chinese New Year in the usual manner – but thanks to the London Chinatown Chinese Association (http://www.lccauk.com/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) we can watch a live, online version of this world-famous celebration. From midday on Sunday, tune in for spectacular performances from Chinese artists, dancers and theatre groups. The online programming will be in both English and Mandarin.
* Starts: Sunday, 14 February 2021 at 12:00pm

In the above video (https://youtu.be/jvBc9YBen8E?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) , Pastor Eliran Wong of the Emmanuel Chinese Church in Chinatown delivers a Happy New Year message to the Chinese community.

Council leader, Rachael Robathan, says: “Chinatown is part of the fabric of our City and I am acutely conscious this is a community that has suffered hard from the outset of the pandemic – both from the collapse in tourist trade, but also on occasion from ill-founded insults and abuse. With the prospect of lockdown lifting in the weeks ahead, I am sure Chinatown, with the full support of the council, will again prove a global draw.”

PROTECTING THOSE MOST VULNERABLE: With temperatures staying bitterly cold, our teams are again out on the street offering extra hostel places to the most vulnerable.

Throughout the pandemic, we have been working with our charity partners to help more than 700 people off the streets and into hotels and other accommodation, providing food, clothing, medical supplies and other essentials. We have also commissioned more than 400 supported housing bed spaces and an assessment centre that can sleep a further 40.

Read more about the ways we are providing round-the-clock support to help people rebuild their lives, and find out how you can help (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-community/rough-sleeping-support-services?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) .

FREE BROADBAND FOR HOME SCHOOLING: Are you struggling to keep your kids connected to their online schooling during the lockdown? We are partnering with several Westminster internet companies who are offering to provide eligible residents with free connections to their broadband networks in order to help with home schooling.

Westminster was recently named London’s most connected borough (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-most-connected-borough-london?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) with more than 56 per cent of residents enjoying full-fibre broadband connectivity. It’s part of our City for All commitment to deliver full-fibre connectivity to all council properties by the end of this year. By working with providers Community Fibre, Hyperoptic and G.Network on this current broadband offer, we’re continuing to keep everyone connected when they need it most.

There are three different offers available and you can check to see if you are eligible at this webpage (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/children-and-education/free-broadband-help-home-schooling?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) . WESTMINSTER WINS KEEP BRITAIN TIDY AWARD: Our successful food waste recycling pilot programme has won the ‘Waste Performance of the Year’ award at the Keep Britain Tidy Awards 2021 (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-city-council-wins-waste-performance-year-keep-britain-tidy-awards-0?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) !

The project was launched in November 2019 in three areas of Westminster and has seen nearly 350 tonnes of food waste collected to date. All our food waste is sent for processing at a plant in Hertfordshire where it is used to generate heat and electricity. Right now, 7,500 households are taking part in the trial and we’re hoping to expand this in the future.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! On Sunday 21 March, we’re asking all households across Westminster to take part in a once-in-a-decade census (https://census.gov.uk/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) .

The census is vital in making sure we can best plan and fund crucial services such as healthcare, transport and housing. In addition, public services such as The London Fire Brigade uses data to prevent fires in high risk areas and organisations such as the Mental Health Foundation uses information to support residents who are at risk of mental ill health.

All responses are strictly confidential and nothing is shared with HMRC or immigration officials. So, please take the time to complete the census when you receive it (https://census.gov.uk/?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=bc00db0e45-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-bc00db0e45-40059651) and help us keep our resources serving you to their maximum potential.
