LEARN AND EARN WITH WESTMINSTER WHEELS: Westminster Wheels is a free course that will teach you how to fix and maintain bikes, meaning you can earn money while learning new skills. The programme is open to Westminster residents aged 17-24 who aren’t already in education, training, or employment.

Last week, Westminster Wheels mechanics made a splash at the project’s upcoming shop, giving the interior of the venue a welcome new coat of paint in preparation for its opening later this month (pictured above right). The shop will be fully functioning, so our mechanics will get real-world experience of fixing and selling bikes.

If you’d like to join the next course, email Liz.Byrne at groundwork.org.uk (mailto:lizbyrne at westminster.gov.uk) with your details and why you’re interested in joining by Friday 19 February.

£23K IN FINES FOR ILLEGAL LOCKDOWN PARTYGOERS: Over the weekend, Council Officers responded to a night-time noise complaint in Belgrave Gardens, NW8. An illegal party was found taking place inside a residential property, with 29 people found in clear violation of lockdown measures and public health guidance. Attendees were issued with £800 fixed penalties by the police, and the council will investigate potential follow-up action with the property occupiers.

Where illegal parties are found, the council will not hesitate to carry out further follow-up actions on top of those taken by the police. Anyone who has concerns about a party or gathering can use the council’s around-the-clock reporting service (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/planning-building-and-environmental-regulations/noise-pollution/noise-complaints-we-investigate?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=96882f2601-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-96882f2601-40059651) . Reports will be investigated by our City Inspectors (such as Sham in the above video).

MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH WESTMINSTER CONNECTS: Volunteering in Westminster is a fantastic way to give back to your local community. Westminster Connects volunteers come from all walks of life and are making a genuine difference to some of our most vulnerable residents.

Retired resident, Martin (left), has been volunteering in the city for ten years. He says that “the fellowship and opportunities to give something back” are particularly rewarding. After joining Westminster Connects, Martin initially delivered shopping to those shielding. Now, he delivers meals to vulnerable adults in the north of the city. “It’s not too demanding as I have a regular route,” he says, “so I get to know some of the ‘clients’ a bit.”

REINVENTING THE NATION'S HIGH STREET: We are committed to supporting and enhancing Oxford Street and its surrounding neighbours and have published plans to breathe a new lease of life into the district. The temporary interventions that have been proposed, and are planned to be delivered by spring this year, could reinvigorate and reimagine the nation’s high street, while supporting the safe and socially-distanced return of visitors once restrictions are eased.

Please share any views you may have on these temporary proposals with the engagement team at stakeholderteam at murphycareyjv.co.uk (mailto:stakeholderteam at murphycareyjv.co.uk) by Friday 19 February.
