The Leader of Council, Cllr Rachael Robathan in Oxford Street, talking about the ambitious plans for the Oxford Street District
REINVENTING THE NATION'S HIGH STREET: We have announced ambitious new plans to revive Oxford Street and the wider District. Our new Oxford Street District (OSD) framework developed with key strategic partners, will breathe a new lease of life into the Oxford Street District (OSD) so it will be world renowned as a great place to live, work, shop and visit.
The council’s Leader, Cllr Rachael Robathan, unveiled the blueprint to reinvent the high street for a post pandemic recovery and, crucially, for the longer term. The new framework builds on previous work and represents our significant commitment to the area. The plan was already in development pre-pandemic but now also responds to massive changes to shopping habits and working patterns, that have been accelerated by COVID-19. It reimagines the nation’s favourite high street through the following themes; greener, smarter, future and together to create a globally competitive centre for innovative retail, commercial activities, culture and living.

ADVICE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE VULNERABLE TO COVID-19: The Government has extended shielding advice to additional groups of people across the country. New research has helped clinicians identify more people who may be at higher risk from COVID-19. This includes people with a combination of underlying health issues, where the combination may lead to an increased risk. If you are in this group, you will receive a letter from the Government in the coming days, asking you to shield until the 31 March. The intention is to make you aware of the risks and the support available, and also to offer you the vaccination more quickly.
Shielding advice has also been extended to 31 March for all those who were previously shielding.
If you are worried, need advice or support, please get in touch with Westminster Connects (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-community/volunteering/westminster-connects?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=45fd781d23-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-45fd781d23-40059651) .

LONDON FASHION WEEK: Westminster City Council and the British Fashion Council are working together to support London Fashion Week designers with the rapid testing of teams, production crews and models, so that collections and content can be filmed safely. London Fashion Week will be streamed virtually this week from 19 – 22 February 2021.
The British Fashion Council, a Westminster not-for-profit organisation who run London Fashion Week, has been warning of the devastating effects of the pandemic on the British fashion industry. London Fashion Week is a huge contributor to the economic and cultural prosperity of Westminster, with the fashion sector representing over £35 billion for the UK’s GDP every year , so being able to support the industry at this difficult time so it can host a successful, digital London Fashion Week is vital.

HOUSING SECRETARY VISITS VULNERABLE ROUGH SLEEPERS: Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick met residents at the Bridge, a Westminster City Council centre for the homeless which looks after some of the most vulnerable rough sleepers in the city. Mr Jenrick spent nearly an hour at the former hotel where he was shown how the council offers help and rehabilitation to people staying at the 36-bed facility. Afterwards, the Housing Secretary praised the council’s response to helping rough sleepers during the pandemic.
Cllr Rachael Robathan said: "We are working 24/7 to encourage rough sleepers off the streets of Westminster and into safe accommodation where they can access a range of help. At the Bridge we are looking after some of the most clinically vulnerable rough sleepers, with in some cases a long history of drink, drug and mental health issues. These are people we need to get to quickly, especially in the depths of winter."
This particular facility, since opening last November, has so far helped more than 50 people by providing rehabilitation and care which, for many, is their first step back toward normality. The Bridge works with partners including Public Health England and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, to help people start to turn their lives around. So far in Westminster over 260 people have been helped from hotels into other accommodation.

CENSUS 2021: Make your voices heard and complete the census: On Sunday 21 March, we’re asking all households across Westminster to take part in a once-in-a-decade census.
The census is vital in making sure we can best plan and fund crucial services such as healthcare, transport and housing. The national campaign has already commenced and you have already heard adverts on some of your favourite radio stations. Look out for further information about the census that will be delivered through your letterboxes from Friday 26 February
Finally, all responses to the census are strictly confidential and nothing is shared with HMRC or immigration officials. Please take the time to complete the census when you receive it and help us to maintain our local services so that we can continue to support Westminster's communities.
