HANUKKAH SAMEACH: To all our friends celebrating Hanukkah across Westminster, please take extra care if you’re meeting friends or family during this time. When meeting indoors, don’t forget to let fresh air in. Take a symptom-free test before you meet others, and test yourself again, before returning to your school or workplace.

BOOST YOUR PROTECTION FROM COVID-19: A COVID-19 booster vaccine helps improve the protection you have from your first two doses of the vaccine. If you are aged 40 and over and had your second dose at least six months ago, you can now get your booster. You can book your COVID-19 booster vaccine online (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/book-or-manage-a-booster-dose-of-the-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine/) if it’s been five months (152 days) since you had your second dose. You’ll be offered appointment dates from six months (182 days) after your second dose. You can also get your booster at one of the walk-in vaccination centres in Westminster (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/walk-vaccination-service-now-available-westminster) .

** Keeping Westminster Safe
------------------------------------------------------------
https://www.westminster.gov.uk/end-the-night-right
ENDING THE NIGHT RIGHT: Anyone can need help while out at night – whether they’re lost, had too much to drink, or just find themselves alone or afraid. Operating on Friday 3, 10 and 17 December from 10pm to 5am, the Soho Angels are an amazing collection of volunteers, run by Westminster City Council in partnership with the LGBT Foundation, that will be on hand to help anyone that becomes vulnerable after a night out. Working with support from the London Ambulance Service, the Met Police and the St John Ambulance Service, the Angels will be there to help whether someone needs water, a person to talk to, or just a safe place to sober up. If you would like to volunteer to be a Soho Angel, please visit our website to find out more details (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/end-the-night-right) .
MAKING SHOPPING SAFER: Thousands of unsafe toys, knock-off designer goods and illegal products were discovered recently in pre-Christmas raids on Oxford Street. Westminster City Council, the Metropolitan Police and HMRC targeted souvenir and ‘sweet shops’ at the popular shopping destination where more than 17,500 items were confiscated during the multi-agency ‘Operation Jade’ (pictured above). These included two bags containing more than the legal limit of THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. “The quantity and variety of goods seized by our officers is astonishing,” said Heather Acton, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Regeneration.

CLEANER AIR FOR MARYLEBONE: Actor and Westminster resident, Olivia Williams, has joined locals campaigning to cut diesel pollution around Marylebone Station. Williams – shortly to star in Netflix drama, The Crown – joined local people interviewed by BBC London (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011wlt) . “It is palpable, you can feel it in your throat,” she said of the diesel smell coming from the station. “It stings your throat when you breath, it makes things dirty. If my lungs look anything like my curtains, it’s a serious health hazard.” Leader of Westminster City Council, Rachael Robathan, has written to the Government to ensure that rail operator Chiltern Trains moves to cleaner hybrid trains. Cllr Robathan (pictured above) told the broadcaster (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011wlt) : “We’d like to see a very clear timeline so that we can measure exactly when this switch to hybrids is going to take place, and the air quality will improve.”

TACKLING YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT: The Westminster Employment Service (WES) works hard to help people across the city into high-quality employment opportunities. One young person supported by WES is Duong Nguyen (pictured above). Duong arrived as an asylum seeker in the UK at just 12 years old, having been forced to flee his birth country of China as he is a Falun Gong practitioner. He was supported for six years by our Children’s Services team, after which WES helped him to gain a place on our Kickstart scheme, our flagship digital skills training programme with Amazon. Duong is now a Software Engineering apprentice with the council and feels confident and excited about his future. “I am working towards a career, earning and learning all at the same time,” he says. “I feel like I have family here.” Find out more about how WES can help you find a path into employment (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/jobs/westminster-employment-service) .

TUBE STRIKE: We are aware that the current industrial action affecting London Underground services may be having an impact on Westminster residents, businesses and visitors. Please make sure to consult the TfL website (https://tfl.gov.uk/) for the latest updates and to plan your journeys safely.

** Have Your Say
------------------------------------------------------------
https://www.westminster.gov.uk/innovation-challenge
HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF YOUR CITY: The Westminster Innovation Challenge (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/innovation-challenge) lets you suggest your own improvements as to how the city runs. We are looking for any bright ideas that make life in Westminster better. Maybe it’s a park that needs an open-air gym, a social media placement scheme, or a city hotel for bees. Whatever it is, we want to hear about it (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/innovation-challenge) . You have until 5 December to submit your idea. Entries will be judged by an expert panel and winners will be announced in early 2022. We will then work with our partners and services to develop the ideas and trial them in real life. Get involved and together we’ll build a smarter city for all.
STAYING INFORMED: We are conducting research to understand how our residents like to stay informed about local news and council information (https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/wccmediasurvey/) . This survey includes questions about news consumption, channels and trust. The survey will take 15 minutes to complete and the closing date is Wednesday 1 December. Provide your email address to be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2Shop voucher! Take the survey here (https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/wccmediasurvey/) .
