** Public Health Updates

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/
FLU VACCINES: The flu vaccine is offered every year to help protect people at risk of getting seriously ill. It’s easy for us to pass on COVID-19 or flu viruses without knowing. This winter there are two essential vaccines you’ll need to protect yourself and your loved ones (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/) . It’s offered free on the NHS to certain groups, including those who are 50 or over, pregnant, or have certain health conditions. Find out if you’re eligible at the NHS website (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/) .
COVID VACCINES FOR 12 to 15-YEAR-OLDS: This autumn, all children aged 12 to 15 will be offered one dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination by the NHS through schools. Vaccinations should help to reduce the risk of complications, time away from education and the spread of COVID-19 within schools. Children who are unable to receive the vaccination at school will be followed up with an offer via their GP. A consent form and information leaflet will be used by the NHS to seek parental consent in the first instance. 12 to 15-year-olds who have had a positive COVID-19 test will need to wait four weeks (28 days) before their COVID-19 vaccine. This starts from the date they had the test. Get more information here (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-resources-for-schools/covid-19-vaccination-programme-for-children-and-young-people-guidance-for-schools) .

TRAVELLING TO ENGLAND FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY: As of Monday 4 October, the rules for travel to England have changed. What you must do depends on whether you are fully vaccinated. There are different rules if you have been in a red list country or territory in the ten days before you arrive in England. Red list rules apply whether you are fully vaccinated or not. Read the latest guidance, including seeing which countries are currently on the red list, at the government’s website (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-to-england-from-another-country-during-coronavirus-covid-19) .

WIN PRIZES AND TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE IN OUR CLASSROOM COMPETITION: Fancy winning prizes such as a trip to London Zoo for your child’s class or a family ticket to the London Aquarium, while also helping to tackle the climate crisis? We’re inviting primary schools and young students from across the City to get involved in our Climate Action Classrooms competition (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/climate-emergency/classroom-competition) – showcasing the ways they’re helping to spread awareness of climate change through group activities, community events, posters, videos or any other creative method they can imagine.

Our resident surveys show us that poor air quality and addressing climate change remains a top priority for people throughout Westminster. With the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP 26) fast approaching, we wanted to show how all members of our communities – young and old – are doing their bit to contribute to create a zero carbon City by 2040.
The competition has two categories to enter. Entire classrooms can show what actions they have taken to save carbon and reduce their collective impact on the environment, while individual pupils can show us what they’re doing about their personal carbon footprint and how they’re inspiring friends and family to be more climate friendly.
The deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday 19 November and you can get full details on how to take part here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/climate-emergency/classroom-competition) .

HELP CREATE A ZERO CARBON WESTMINSTER: This November, the UK is hosting the UN Climate Change Conference (also known as COP26) and we’ll be running a series of activities to help raise awareness of climate action in Westminster. This includes two community open days, at which residents and businesses can find out more about how to reduce their carbon emissions. We’ll be showcasing community projects, advice and services, from planting, cooking and eating, to recycling, energy saving, sustainable transport and much more.
The events will take place on Saturday 6 and Saturday 13 November. If you’d like to come along, please send us an email (mailto:climateemergency at westminster.gov.uk) and we’ll be in touch very soon.
If you are a local organisation that helps people to be more sustainable, we’d love to hear from you. Let us know if you would like to host a stall by contacting us here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/climate-action-community-open-days) .
HAVE YOUR SAY: With COP26 fast approaching, we’re all looking at ways to reduce our carbon emissions and work towards a net zero future. Our vision (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/climate-emergency) is that all new developments are net zero and emissions from existing buildings are significantly reduced. Which of our proposed actions do you feel with have the biggest impact on reducing our emissions?

MAKE SOME NOISE FOR OUR LIBRARIES: As Libraries Week draws to a close this Sunday, we want to celebrate everything our Westminster libraries have to offer. From book collections to an ongoing programme of events and activities (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/events?field_gov_event_date_value_1=&field_gov_event_date_value_2=&field_gov_event_type_target_id=35&field_gov_event_audience_target_id=All) , our libraries play a vital role in their local communities.

https://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-community/libraries
We’ve recently launched the Westminster Business Library in Victoria (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-community/libraries/westminster-business-library) , containing state-of-the-art workspaces for remote workers and start-up businesses. Victoria is also home to a newly extended children’s library, providing more space for little ones to develop their reading skills. Meanwhile, the Westminster Reference Library is being transformed into a hub for the arts, something that will see the Westminster Music Library (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-community/libraries/westminster-music-library/about) flourish. Find more about what our libraries offer (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-community/libraries) .
YOUR VIEW: In last week’s MyWestminster (https://mailchi.mp/westminster.gov.uk/22sep2021-147682?e=df04244d0d) , we asked you which of the following you love most about your local area, and the clear winner was…
* Our local parks and green spaces – 51%
* The people have a real sense of community spirit – 17%
* It’s clean and well maintained – 16%
* There’s a great selection of local shops and amenities – 16%
We are continuing to improve the sustainability of our parks and open spaces. We only use electric leaf blowers in Westminster managed parks and gardens, we’re reducing annual planting and are converting grass areas to wildflower ‘meadows’. Find out how to make the most of our park spaces here (https://active.westminster.gov.uk/active-places/parks-and-open-spaces/) .
