Neuroscientist Anil Seth will be in conversation with broadcaster Adam Rutherford to discuss a new theory of consciousness that challenges our understanding of perception and reality.

In his groundbreaking new book, Being You: A New Science of Consciousness, Seth charts the developments in our understanding of consciousness, revealing radical interdisciplinary breakthroughs that challenge the way we think about the self.

Drawing on his original research and collaborations with cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, brain imagers, virtual reality wizards, mathematicians and philosophers, he puts forward an exhilarating new theory about how we experience the world: one that should encourage us to view ourselves as less apart from and more a part of the rest of nature.

Anil Seth is a leading British researcher in the field of consciousness science. He is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience and Co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness at the University of Sussex. He writes regularly for New Scientist, The Guardian and the BBC and has been interviewed on Radio 4's The Life Scientific. His TED talk on consciousness has been viewed over 10 million times; he is currently a Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellow. Seth's latest book, Being You, is a radical new theory of consciousness that challenges our understanding of perception and reality.

Adam Rutherford is a science writer and broadcaster. He spent ten years at the editorial staff of the world's premier science journal Nature. During this time, he also wrote and presented several series and programmes for BBC television and radio, including 'The Gene Code', and the award-winning The Cell for BBC4, and Playing God on the rise of synthetic biology for the leading science strand Horizon, as well as writing for the science pages of The Guardian. On BBC Radio, his many series have included Sexual Nature on the reasons sex even exists, and In Our Own Image on the question of whether we are still evolving. His first book, Creation, on the origin of life and synthetic biology, was published by Viking in 2013 to outstanding reviews. His latest book, How to Argue with a Racist: History, Science, Race and Reality, is a manifesto for a twenty-first century understanding of human evolution and variation, and a timely weapon against the misuse of science to justify bigotry.
