** Dan Saladino:
Eating to Extinction
------------------------------------------------------------
**
Next week, join 5x15 for a captivating and urgent exploration of some of the world's most endangered foods, which reveals a world at a crisis point. Eating to Extinction by Dan Saladino is essential reading for our times, an astonishing journey through the past, present and future of food, a love letter to the diversity of global food cultures, and a work of great urgency and hope.
>From a tiny crimson pear in the west of England to great chunks of fermented sheep meat in the Faroe Islands, from pistachios in Syria to flat oysters in Denmark, from a wild honey harvested with the help of birds to an exploding corn that might just hold the key to the future of food - these are just some of the thousands of foods around the world today that are at risk of being lost for ever.
Intensive agriculture and the standardization of taste are not only wiping out many edible plants, but also the food cultures, histories and livelihoods that go with them. It is an age of mass extinction.
Inspired by a global project to collect and preserve foods that are at risk of extinction, Dan Saladino sets out to encounter these foods and the people fighting to save them. He meets the pioneering farmers, scientists, cooks, food producers and indigenous communities who are preserving food traditions and fighting for change.
Each food tells a story - some of them moving and personal, some of them urgent and timely - and collectively they span the history of civilisation and touch on many of the biggest issues of our time, from climate change to global inequality.
Join us to explore the foods around the world threatened with extinction and to examine a disappearing world - and what this means for both humanity and the future of the planet.
Dan Saladino is a journalist and broadcaster who makes programmes about food for BBC Radio 4 and the World Service. His work has been recognised by the Guild of Food Writers Awards, the Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards, and in America by the James Beard Foundation. Eating to Extinction was awarded the 2019 Jane Grigson Trust Award. He lives in Cheltenham but his roots are Sicilian.
Rosie Boycott is a cross bench peer in the House of Lords, a food campaigner, co-founder of 5x15 and author of Our Farm. For ten years she was chair of The London food Board, responsible to the Mayor of London for food policy in the City.
