Bill McKibben was one of the first writers to sound the alarm about climate change in the 1980s and ever since has been one of the most visible and effective environmental activists.

Penguin Green Ideas: An Idea Can Go Extinct is in the Penguin Classics series of Green Ideas. Over the past 75 years, a new canon has emerged. As life on Earth has become irrevocably altered by humans, visionary thinkers around the world have raised their voices to defend the planet, and affirm our place at the heart of its restoration. Together, these books show the richness of environmental thought, and point the way to a fairer, saner, greener world. This Autumn 5x15 is working on a number of talks with the ground breaking authors from the Green Ideas series.

Bill McKibben is founder and senior adviser emeritus of 350.org. His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change, and has appeared in 24 languages. He’s gone on to write many more books, and his work appears regularly in periodicals from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. He serves as the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he has won the Gandhi Peace Prize as well as honorary degrees from 19 colleges and universities. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award, sometimes called the alternative Nobel, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers.

Rosie Boycott is a cross bench peer in the House of Lords, a food campaigner, co-founder of 5x15 and author of Our Farm. For ten years she was chair of The London food Board, responsible to the Mayor of London for food policy in the City.
