** Making our Streets Cleaner and Safer
------------------------------------------------------------
This week, we have continued to take lots of action to make the streets of Westminster safer and more accessible for residents and visitors. This includes cracking down on ‘dockless’ temporary hire bikes that have been abandoned in the middle of pavements, tackling the scourge of rogue pedicab drivers, and attending to a raft of on-street repairs and clean-up issues reported by you.
https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/statement-dockless-bikes
We have recently been inundated with complaints about abandoned dockless bikes blocking pavements, particularly around Underground stations. In response, the Cabinet this week wrote to four dockless bike operators (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/statement-dockless-bikes) – Tier, Dott, Lime and Human Forest – to remind them of their responsibilities to pedestrians and road users following a wave of their bikes being abandoned on our pavements and roads.

There’s currently no agreement in place for dockless bikes to park in Westminster, and abandoned bikes are a safety hazard to pedestrians, particularly those with mobility issues or visual impairments. We are very supportive of new forms of transport that contribute to a cleaner environment (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/expansion-ulez-will-help-improve-air-quality-westminster) , however the current free-for-all on dockless bikes is unsustainable.
https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/pedicab-drivers-fined-more-ps5000-council-crack-down
Six rogue pedicab drivers have been fined more than £5,000 (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/pedicab-drivers-fined-more-ps5000-council-crack-down) after enforcement action by the council working in partnership with Metropolitan Police. On 29 and 30 July, council officers worked to crack down on rogue pedicabs (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/pedicab-drivers-fined-more-ps5000-council-crack-down) around Covent Garden, Oxford Street and other areas within the West End. Rogue pedicabs can create problems such as blocking pavements, causing accessibility issues, annoying residents and businesses late at night, and overcharging visitors.

Meanwhile, our City Inspectors, street cleaning and highways teams have had another busy month identifying and responding to resident reports throughout the city. From graffiti removal in the Abbey Road ward, to lamppost repairs in the Lancaster Gate area, to fly tipping in Marylebone to much, much more – our front line teams work tirelessly every day to keep your streets clean, safe and accessible. You can report incidents that need our attention via our online Report-It hub (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/report-it) .

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUS ROUTES: Transport for London’s consultation on possible changes to bus routes runs until the end of this Sunday (7 August). Make sure to have your say (https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/busreview) on how proposed changes could affect you before it’s too late. Buses are a cheap, convenient way to travel around London and are vital for connecting communities. Leader of Westminster City Council, Cllr Adam Hug, said: “I am deeply concerned that the Government’s failure to properly fund TfL while we recover from the pandemic may have a real impact on our vital bus network. It’s very important that as many people as possible get involved with the consultation, and we will be supporting them to ensure their views are clearly heard.”

It’s great to see masqueraders of all shapes and sizes participating in costume!” Find out more about this year’s carnival here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/notting-hill-carnival) .

** Public Health Updates
------------------------------------------------------------
https://www.westminster.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/your-health/monkeypox
MONKEYPOX VACCINATION: The NHS is offering vaccinations to those most at risk of being exposed to monkeypox. This includes some healthcare workers, some men who are gay, bisexual or have sex with other men, and people in close contact with someone who has monkeypox. To make the best use of current supply, and to help stop the spread of the virus, vaccine prioritisation is in line with advice from the UK Health Security Agency. Local NHS or sexual health services will invite people when it is their turn to get vaccinated. Find out more about monkeypox (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/your-health/monkeypox) .
