We have begun seizing dockless bicycles left strewn on roads and pavements (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/council-seizes-dockless-bikes-blocking-pavements) across central London. The move follows a spike in bikes being dumped across the city throughout the summer. Westminster is seeing hundreds of dockless bikes abandoned in the middle of the pavement every day.
Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg, Cabinet Member for City Management and Air Quality, said: “We’ve contacted the major operators and made it clear that if they don’t remove their bikes from the pavement the council will – and we’ll charge them for doing so. Any money we raise will go towards improving cycling infrastructure on our streets.”

We encourage cycling in Westminster to improve the health and wellbeing of residents and to reduce carbon emissions. But dockless bikes are regularly found blocking and obstructing pavements and crossings – forcing pedestrians and wheelchair-users to move into the road, putting their safety at risk. We have begun working with several operators (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/council-seizes-dockless-bikes-blocking-pavements) to resolve the issue and will bring you updates in future editions of MyWestminster.

GOING FOR GOLD: Four Westminster athletes, supported by our Champions of the Future scheme, have excelled at the latest Commonwealth Games (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-athletes-win-gold-and-silver-commonwealth-games-0) . Ashley McKenzie (pictured above), who was born and brought up in Queen’s Park and learned his sport at Moberly Judo Club, regained his Commonwealth title after an eight-year wait. On the track, Bianca Williams won Silver in the women’s 4x100 relay. Maia Bouchier came fourth with England in the T20 cricket, while Paddington’s Tin-Tin Ho reached the quarter-finals in table tennis for both the women’s team and mixed doubles. Many congratulations to all four for doing the city proud!

JUST TWO WEEKS TILL CARNIVAL! We spoke to Claire Johnson, a band member for Westminster-based Genesis Mas, about why she loves the Notting Hill Carnival (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/notting-hill-carnival) and why it’s such an important part of our city’s culture. “Carnival is a piece of continued history,” she said. “The roots in this country and around the world stem from such positive change that was being fought for. That’s why it’s so important that it continues. Plus, the creative expression, the freedom to do what you want, a big party on the road – I can’t wait for it to be back, it’s going to be amazing. I think it’s fantastic that we’re still going after 60 years.” Find out more about Notting Hill Carnival and how it will bring the excitement to your area (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/notting-hill-carnival) .

GET CUTE AT PICCADILLY: This month 12 Piccadilly Arcade has been taken over by kawaii-punk designers, Typical Freak (https://www.typicalfreaks.com/) , dealing out the DIY anti-establishment ideals of punk, with a colourful cuteness reminiscent of Japan. The family owners (pictured above) describe their clothes as “a maximalist explosion of colour and we hope they bring a bit of fun and enjoyment to whoever wears them.” Typical Freaks will be in residence at 12 Piccadilly Arcade until 31 August.

POLIO VACCINE FOR LONDON CHILDREN: All children aged 1 to 9 in London are being offered a dose of polio vaccine. For some, this may be on top of their routine vaccinations. There are signs the virus may be spreading in London and the number of children vaccinated is lower than it should be. Boosting immunity in children should help protect them and reduce the risk of the virus spreading. If your child is eligible, the NHS will contact you to book an appointment. Find out more here (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/polio-booster-campaign-resources/have-your-polio-vaccine-now-information-for-parents) .
https://www.westminster.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/your-health/monkeypox
MONKEYPOX VACCINATION: The NHS is offering vaccinations to those most at risk of being exposed to monkeypox. This includes some healthcare workers, some men who are gay, bisexual or have sex with other men, and people in close contact with someone who has monkeypox. To make the best use of current supply, and to help stop the spread of the virus, vaccine prioritisation is in line with advice from the UK Health Security Agency. Local NHS or sexual health services will invite people when it is their turn to get vaccinated. Find out more about monkeypox (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/your-health/monkeypox) .
