Writing Masterclasses

** 'Everyone has a book in them,’ they say. But not everyone manages to write it.

Over three sessions featuring authors shortlisted for this year's Rathbones Folio Prize, some of our finest contemporary writers explain how they translate what is in their heads to the page. Chaired by the esteemed host of BBC Radio 4’s Bookclub, James Naughtie, each one-hour masterclass will give you food for thought and unique insight into how writing works.

In this opening session, we focus on the themes of history and politics. Damon Galgut (The Promise) and Sunjeev Sahota (China Room) discuss radically political and devastating critiques of two very different worlds, approached in very different ways. They will also discuss how they set about portraying the power dynamics of families across the generations.

Damon Galgut's Booker Prize winning The Promise is a modern family saga that could only have come from South Africa, a powerful story of a family in crisis, and an epic drama that unfurls against the unrelenting march of national history.

In Sunjeev Sahota's China Room, Mehar, a young bride in rural 1929 Punjab, is trying to discover the identity of her new husband. She and her sisters-in-law, married to three brothers in a single ceremony, spend their days at work in the family's 'china room', sequestered from contact with the men. Spiralling around Mehar's story is that of a young man who, in 1999, travels from England to the now-deserted farm, its 'china room' locked and barred.

This session will feature additional contributions from Rathbones Folio Prize 2022 judge William Atkins, the acclaimed author of The Moor, which was shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize, and The Immeasurable World: A Desert Journey, which won the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year award.
