This week we marked the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, remembering those who lost their lives, those bereaved and everyone affected. Leader of Westminster City Council, Cllr Adam Hug, commented (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/remembering-grenfell-statement-leader-council) : “Five years on, the pain and horror of the Grenfell Tower tragedy remain as strong as ever. The tragedy should be the cue for us to redouble our efforts to ensure people are never again forced to live in substandard and dangerous accommodation. It shows the vital responsibly those in authority have to ensure people are kept safe and the ongoing need for transparency and accountability in public life.”

CRACKING DOWN ON CANDY SHOPS: Council officers raided three American-style candy stores on Oxford Street on Monday, seizing more than £100,000 worth of counterfeit and unsafe goods – including £22,000 worth of fake Wonka chocolate bars (https://twitter.com/WCCpressoffice/status/1537010688480223238) in one shop alone. It is part of an ongoing campaign by the council to highlight trading standards breaches in US sweet and souvenir shops, along with the fact we are investigating 30 shops on Oxford Street for business rate arrears of nearly £8m.

PUTTING THE BRAKES ON PEDICABS: Five pedicab operators have been issued the largest fines to date following enforcement action by Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police, highlighting our continued commitment to tackling the issue (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-council-secures-record-fines-nuisance-pedicab-drivers) . During the last year, more than 50 pedicab operators have been reported for prosecutions and we’ve moved hundreds of drivers on for playing excessively loud music and creating accessibility issues by blocking pavements.

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSES: Transport for London has announced its ‘Central London Bus Review’ consultation, which proposes changes to bus routes across the city. For Westminster, the following routes will be impacted: 11, 14, 16, 24, 31 and 74. Buses are needed to offer our residents the cheapest way to travel around London and are vital for those who are not able-bodied or who work nightshifts. This is why we’re asking residents to take part in the consultation (https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/busreview) . By doing so, you can ensure your voices are heard. Have your say today (https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/busreview) .

COMMEMORATING THE FALKLANDS CONFLICT: Westminster City Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Ellie Ormsby issued the following statement this week, to commemorate the 40-year anniversary of the Falklands War. “This week’s anniversary gives us the opportunity to remember the great sacrifice and commitment of our service personnel in protecting the rights and sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. A commitment no less relevant now given the turbulence we see across Europe. We remember all those impacted by the conflict and are committed to supporting service personnel and veterans across our city today.”

MEN’S HEALTH WEEK – BE AWARE OF PROSTATE CANCER: One in eight men will get prostate cancer. If you’re over 50, black, or your dad or brother had prostate cancer, you’re at even higher risk of getting it. Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening. But when it is, the earlier you catch it the more likely it is to be cured. For more information, including what symptoms to look out for, please visit the NHS website (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/symptoms/) .
