This week, we celebrated the lives and contributions of the Windrush Generation (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/windrush) , those who came to London between 1948 and 1970 upon invitation from the British Government to rebuild a nation ravaged by war. Events included the Westminster Windrush Film Festival, where the ‘And Still We Rise (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5hy4BkFCVI&feature=emb_imp_woyt) ’ documentary was screened. Attendees were greeted by the sounds of the steel pan drum and served traditional Caribbean drinks.

The Lord Mayor opened the event, and the film included the stories of Westminster residents, Peter Straker, Roseline Monrose and Sheila Ramsey. Later in the evening, Peter, an actor by trade, shared his story at a meeting of the Full Council (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHteBXf0AUY) , giving a rousing performance of ‘Day-O’, a traditional Jamaican folk song.
You can continue to learn and celebrate the lives of the Windrush Generation by attending the Windrush Generation, Unsung Heroes exhibition now on at Queen’s Park library until Friday 29 July (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/windrush) .
** Information for Residents

ARMED FORCES DAY: Members of our military services gathered with the Lord Mayor of Westminster and Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Ellie Ormsby at City Hall today to take part in a flag-raising for Armed Forces Day on Saturday 25 June. The day commemorates the service of men and women in years gone by and across the world today and there are many ways for people, communities, and organisations across the country to show their support (https://www.armedforcesday.org.uk/get-involved/) .

ELECTRIC SCHOOL SIGNS: Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg visited St Mary’s Bryanston Square CE Primary School yesterday to see a new electronic sign in action (https://youtu.be/XGdesUqT9no) . The sign lights up at school drop-off and pick-up times instructing vehicles not to enter this road at those times, and represents a move towards creating safer streets around schools. This will help to reduce traffic and pollution, meaning children, parents and teachers can travel to and from school safely by bike, scooter or on foot.

SUPPORT OUR BUSES: Transport for London has announced its ‘Central London Bus Review’ consultation, proposing changes to bus routes across the city. Buses are needed to offer our residents the cheapest way to travel around London and are vital for those who are not able-bodied or who work nightshifts. Have your say on the consultation today (https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/busreview) .

AFFECTED BY LAST YEAR’S FLOODING? On 12 and 13 July last year, areas of Westminster experienced flash floods. Hundreds of residents were forced to leave their homes and have struggled to get insurance companies to cover the cost of damages. We are calling upon the government to do more to support residents affected by flooding (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-council-call-action-help-residents-risk-flooding-insure-their-homes-and-possessions) . If you were affected by the floods, please contact us by phone on 020 7641 2259 or by email at mediateam at westminster.gov.uk (mailto:mediateam at westminster.gov.uk) .

MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS UP TO DATE WITH VACCINATIONS: Recent news that the virus which causes polio has been detected in London shows these illnesses are still around. The risk is low, but it is very important to make sure your child is up to date with their vaccinations. Check your child’s red book, contact your GP or visit the NHS website (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/nhs-vaccinations-and-when-to-have-them/) to find out more.
VACCINATION SURVEY: Are you a parent of a child aged under 10 years? Share your views and experiences (https://imperial.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eJsu30w2PApHD8y?jfefe=new) about childhood vaccines with researchers at Imperial College London and Mosaic Community Trust to help the team understand why some children get vaccinated late or miss out on some of their routine vaccinations.
