Hay Festival Tales: A Night of Wild Ideas

Join us at the Tabernacle in London for an evening of short performances and provocations by an array of stars from Hay Festival 2023.

This is a place to refuel your curiosity and spark up debate, where great minds won't always think alike. Hosted by 'rock star mythologist' Natalie Haynes, this special one-off event teases bold new work and big thinking.

Speakers

Sally Adee is an award-winning science and technology writer and the author of We Are Electric: The New Science of Our Body’s Electrome. She has won a US National Press Club award, a BT Information Security award and the Guild of Health Writers Award for her inside account of Silicon Valley’s young blood clinics.

Tom Bullough grew up on a hill farm in Radnorshire, Wales, and lives in the Brecon Beacons. He is a climate activist, tutor and the author of four novels – A, The Claude Glass, Konstantin, and Addlands – and, now, Sarn Helen, his first work of non-fiction.

Ha-Joon Chang teaches economics at SOAS University of London, and is one of the world's leading economists. His latest myth-busting book, Edible Economics: A Hungry Economist Explains the World, was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week.

Fflur Dafydd is a novelist and screenwriter who writes in Welsh and English. Her latest thriller, The Library Suicides, is an English-language reimagining of her award-winning novel Y Llyfrgell.

Laura Dockrill is an author and illustrator. She has written thirteen books for children and young adults and has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Book of The Year Prize, long listed for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for the YA Book Prize.

Allie Esiri is an accomplished curator and host of live poetry events at The National Theatre and The Bridge Theatre. Her anthologies A Poem for Every Day of the Year and A Poem for Every Night of the Year won multiple awards. Her latest collection is Shakespeare for Every Day of the Year.

Xiaolu Guo is a novelist, essayist, screenwriter and film maker. Born in south China, published six books before moving to Britain in 2002. Her new memoir, Radical: A Life of My Own is playful, provocative and original.

Natalie Haynes is a broadcaster and author of six books, most recently Pandora’s Jar: Women and the Greek Myths (2020) and A Thousand Ships, which was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020.

Jordan Stephens is best known as one half of hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks. An accomplished actor (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Tucked, Been So Long), he is now an author, creating the award-winning children's book The Missing with illustrator Beth Suzanna.

Andria Zafirakou won the Global Teacher Prize in 2018, using the $1 million prize to set up Artists in Residence, a charity that brings professional artists into disadvantaged schools across the UK. In 2019, she was appointed an MBE for her services to education.
