Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Trees and Forests
------------------------------------------------------------
**
This evening, for the second event in our new series with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, we invite you on a journey through the world's forests...
Guided by a stellar line up of expert and internationally acclaimed speakers, who address questions around biodiversity, greenwashing and tree networks, this unique discussion will illuminate why trees are so vital to our ecosystems. Chaired by cross-bench peer and 5x15 co-founder Rosie Boycott.
Speakers
Joe Crowley is a broadcaster and environmental journalist best known for his regular reports on BBC1’s The One Show and Countryfile. A compelling story-teller, Joe is also a talented investigator and undercover journalist. In 2021 he pitched, co-produced and presented Panorama’s River Pollution Scandal, proving for the first time the illegal dumping of sewage in rivers by the UK water industry. He has also presented a number of ITV Tonight programmes. In 2022, he investigated the Drax Green Energy scandal for BBC Panorama, and revealed how Drax power station is chopping down trees and taking logs from some of the world’s most precious forests.
Ed Ikin is the Director of Wakehurst, leading Kew’s 535-acre wild botanic garden and fostering research partnerships with Kew Science. Ed has pioneered major new projects in the Sussex site, including the creation of a new six-acre American Prairie, Wakehurst’s most ambitious horticultural project in over a decade, and the award-winning Winter Garden. In 2021, Ed launched Nature Unlocked: the Landscape Ecology Programme at Wakehurst, a new science research project that uses Wakehurst’s rich landscape as a ‘living laboratory’ to scientifically measure nature’s benefits for people and the environment. Prior to joining Wakehurst, Ed was Chair of London Parks & Gardens Trust and General Manager for National Trust London, opening the organisation's first garden centre at Morden Hall Park. Ed was a 2017 Clore Fellow.
Professor Suzanne Simard is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia and the author of the book Finding the Mother Tree. Her research revealed that trees live in a connected society, trading, collaborating, and communicating in sophisticated ways through a shared underground network. She is a pioneer on the frontier of plant communication and intelligence; and has been hailed as a scientist who conveys complex, technical ideas in a way that is dazzling and profound. Her work has influenced filmmakers (the Tree of Souls in James Cameron’s Avatar) and her TED talks have been viewed by more than 10 million people worldwide. Her current research investigates how these complex relationships contribute to forest resiliency, adaptability and recovery and has far-reaching implications for how to manage and heal forests from human impacts, including climate change. She was awarded the Kew International Medal in March 2023, for her ‘invaluable work and devotion’ championing
biodiversity in forests.
Kathy Willis CBE is a Professor of Biodiversity at the University of Oxford, the Principal of St Edmund Hall, and a Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords. She has previously served as Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens and as a member of the UK Government’s Natural Capital Committee. Her research focuses on understanding how plant biodiversity responds to climate change and other environmental drivers, as well as studying the ecosystem services that we obtain from plant biodiversity. She is internationally recognized for her work on these topics, and has led a number of global initiatives on plant and fungal biodiversity change. Kathy is also passionate about communicating science to the public. Her broadcasting work has included writing and presenting the 25-part BBC Radio 4 series From Roots to Riches, and alongside academic papers she has published three books for a more general audience. She was awarded the Michael Faraday Medal for public communication of science in 2015
by the Royal Society.

** On the evening of the summer solstice, 5x15 comes to Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (https://www.kew.org/) for a very special live event celebrating the wonders of the natural world.
Biodiversity is crucial to life, from the food we eat to the air we breathe. But human actions continue to threaten the earth’s incredible array of plant and animal species, and the consequences of biodiversity loss will continue to be seismic and far-reaching.
For this special collaboration between 5x15 and Kew Gardens, five fantastic speakers will speak for fifteen minutes on the theme of the event - what we stand to lose and why we must protect the precious and extraordinary variety of our planet’s ecosystems. We’ll hear about the forgotten temperate rainforests of Britain, the hidden universe of life in our own back gardens, and words for wildlife that have been lost and rediscovered.
Join us for this midsummer evening of live storytelling in the beautiful setting of the Temperate House (https://www.kew.org/kew-gardens/whats-in-the-gardens/temperate-house) at Kew.
Tickets will allow guests early access to the Gardens (from 2pm on the day). A complimentary drink will also be provided on the evening, courtesy of Laithwaites Wines (http://laithwaites.co.uk/) . There are limited tickets available. Book now!
Speakers
Professor Alexandre Antonelli is the Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He is also Professor in Biodiversity and Systematics at the University of Gothenburg and Visiting Professor at the Department of Plant Science at the University of Oxford. Antonelli’s passion is nature, and his mission mirrors that of RBG Kew’s: to understand and protect biodiversity for the well-being of people and the future of all life on Earth. To this end, he studies the distribution, evolution, threats and sustainable uses of species and develops methods to speed up scientific discovery and innovation. He has published over 180 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters and his work has been cited over 12,600 times. He was named on the Web of Science/Clarivate 2020 and 2021 ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ list, which iidentifies pioneering researchers in the top 1% of their field. His first book, The Hidden Universe: Adventures in Biodiversity, was published in 2022.
Jackie Morris is an award-winning British writer and illustrator. Morris studied at the Bath Academy of Art and started her career as an illustrator by working for magazines including Radio Times, New Statesman, New Society and Country Living. She has illustrated over 60 books, and is best known for the stunning The Lost Words (2017), co-written with Robert Macfarlane – a love song to many increasingly rare words pertaining to nature and the natural world. These illustrations earned Morris the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2019. Morris and Macfarlane’s second collaboration, The Lost Spells, was published in October 2020, and they are currently working on a third, The Book of Birds. Morris is nominated for the 2024 Andersen Award by the International Board of Books for Young People.
Guy Shrubsole is a writer and environmental campaigner. He has worked for Rewilding Britain, Friends of the Earth, the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture. He has written widely for publications including The Guardian and New Statesman. Both his first book, Who Owns England?, and his second, The Lost Rainforests of Britain, were Sunday Times bestsellers. The latter was also voted Sunday Times Science Book of the Year.
Further speakers to be announced soon...
