September 2023
Welcome, Matt Horvat
On 1 July, we began a new chapter at ASL with the arrival of our ninth head of school. Matt and his family moved to London from Redmond, Washington, where he served as the head of the Overlake School for 11 years. “I aspire to settle into my new role with humility, curiosity and commitment,” Matt wrote to the ASL community. Commencement for the Class of 2023!
In June, the Class of 2023 became the newest members of ASL’s 17,000+ alumni network during the commencement exercises held at Central Hall Westminster. Highlights include remarks from the Lord Mayor of Westminster, farewell messages from Interim Head Coreen R. Hester and departing High School Principal Devan Ganeshananthan , and the commencement address delivered by Amaryllis Fox ’98. Congratulations to our graduates!

A heartfelt thank you!
Since the launch of the ASL Foundation’s partnership with FreeWill in May, five thoughtful members of the ASL community have notified us of their intention to leave a gift to the ASL Foundation in their will. Our deep gratitude to these individuals and to everyone else who have chosen to give back in such a special and personal way.

Alumni spotlight: Lily Whitman ’20
She traded London and her hockey cleats for the Midwest and boxing gloves. Today, Lily is a champion athlete in the world’s largest all-women boxing club, and she’s more ambitious than ever before.

WorkX
For nearly 40 years, ASL high school students have been dipping their toes in the workforce, thanks to an evolving program built by parents, alumni, teachers and staff that provides real-world professional experience to eager teens on the cusp of taking flight from One Waverley Place. Today, the office of student advising and a dedicated PCA committee ensure that the Work Experience (WorkX) program <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2facademics%2fhigh-school%2fstudent-advising%2fwork-experience&srcid=49178383&srctid=1&erid=-1516441207&trid=e6cb9431-a7e4-4ce6-9964-bd69a164b891> is an inspiring, impactful venture for all involved. Reminiscing with Joyce Anderson (ASL 1980-2012) Barbara Kim P ’21 ’22, Clayton Lewis P ’01 ’03 (ASL 1980-1994), Terry Mather P ’11 ’14 ’17 and others, we celebrate its past, present and bright future.

Chris Jamison ’02 and his family did a One Waverley Fly-By over the summer. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with his wife and two boys. When he’s not teaching middle school, he can be found performing gigs as a contemporary folk musician. “I got my start at ASL and Battle of the Bands!” Chris shares. Speaking of Eagle musicians, we’re so grateful to middle school technology coordinator Colin Bridgewater (ASL 2000-present) for launching a Spotify playlist (search "Once an Eagle always an Eagle" within Spotify) featuring ASLers’ greatest hits. Listen to tunes from Nick Sanchez ’06, Manu Gualandri ’16, Trevor Jones (ASL mid 80s-2021) and 20 others! Are we missing anyone? Please get in touch <mailto:alumni at asl.org> so we can keep the list growing.

It is always heartwarming when Eagles support younger Eagles. During the varsity soccer season this past year, pro soccer player Harry Nevins ’18 presented to the players over Zoom about his experience as a student athlete at ASL, in college and how it shaped his current career. “The presentation had a huge impact on our students,” explained soccer coach Danny Cook. “Alumni offer real value to our program.” Thanks, Harry!

In addition to Lily Whitman ’20’s success on the Notre Dame’s women’s boxing club, we have some great news to report on other Whitmans and their inspiring pursuits! After doing a post-grad year at the Peddie School, former Eagle Alex Whitman ’22 accepted a place at Notre Dame, started in January, and walked onto the famed soccer team last spring. Alex’s cousin Maddy Whitman ’22 was one of nine cross-country runners to represent Northwestern University at the NCAA Championships last November. She had a great overall season and competed strongly in several meets, including the Big Ten Championship. Meanwhile, Quinn Whitman ’19 graduated from Wake Forest University and is now living and working in the Vail Valley of Colorado, doing real estate for LIV Sotheby’s.
* The ASL community mourns the loss of retired high school physics teacher Ethan Higgins P ’07 ’09 (ASL 1979-2009) , who died on 16 August 2023. Ethan leaves behind his wife, former high school world languages teacher Aneesa Higgins P ’07 ’09 (ASL 1980-2012), their children, Alex '07 and Anna '09 , and many friends, former students and colleagues who loved him dearly. We are deeply saddened to report the loss of Marc Dillon , a fixture of ASL’s After-school Program for many years. He passed away this summer and will be dearly missed.
*
Mick Fernandez (ASL 2002-23) lost his brave battle with cancer on 19 July. Mick was a devoted member of ASL’s maintenance team for more than 20 years, serving as the mechanical engineer. He will be remembered for his constantly positive attitude and friendly, unflappable approach to his work. Our thoughts are with Mick’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
