At the intersection of olive trees and education, Eugenia ’18 feels at home
Passionate about food, family and working with kids, Eugenia Cavarretta ’18 has struck the perfect balance between giving back to her alma mater here on Waverley Place, and helping her mother, Costanza, build a high-end olive oil business by hand from farmland in central Sicily that has been in their family for centuries. Class of 1969 reunites in California to celebrate 55 years since ASL graduation
In mid-October, a group dubbed the “Tenacious Ten” by host Jerry Post ’69 gathered in Eureka, California, to celebrate the 55th reunion of the ASL Class of 1969—broadened to include the classes of 1967-71. Jerry, who made a career for himself in journalism after his ASL days, reports on the merriment and connections sparked by the reunion, which was the most recent of many held by his classmates over the past five-plus decades. This year, we have 33 ASL alumni who returned to ASL to send their own kids to their alma mater! We hope to feature one of our wonderful alumni families in each edition of London Calling this school year. Email alumni at asl.org <mailto:alumni at asl.org> if you and your family fit the bill and are willing to be featured!
“The School definitely needs to map the interior to help families navigate the labyrinth it has become—although, in fairness, Kayan thinks I’m just clueless. (He may have a point.)” – Mo Habbas ’86 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2falumni%2falumni-news%2ffamilyfeature&srcid=56759037&srctid=1&erid=-1155332371&trid=6605af5e-d5cf-4445-a813-a4053a607b74>
Thank you for making a difference!
Thank you so much to the global ASL community for coming together in support of this year’s Annual Fund, which culminated in a fantastic Power of Orange Giving Day on Tuesday, 3 December! We surpassed our participation goal, with a total of 526 individuals—each with their own reasons to love ASL—giving back to make a difference. If you haven’t yet made a 2024-25 gift to the ASL Foundation’s Annual Fund, it isn’t too late to do so. Give now! <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2fgiving%2fhow-to-give%2fmakeagift&srcid=56759037&srctid=1&erid=-1155332371&trid=6605af5e-d5cf-4445-a813-a4053a607b74> The Annual Fund helps to support all the programs that make ASL such a fantastic school. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
We love hearing what you're up to! Submit your own class notes <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2falumni%2fget-in-touch%2fclass-notes&srcid=56759037&srctid=1&erid=-1155332371&trid=6605af5e-d5cf-4445-a813-a4053a607b74>, or email alumni at asl.org <mailto:alumni at asl.org> to keep us in the loop.
The past month has seen lots of Eagles flocking back to the nest for alumni tours. Recent alumni visitors include Anney Siegel-Wamsat ’74, Kristie Trice ’75, Rachel Phillips ’85 , siblings Shona Crabtree ’91 and Dwight Crabtree ’98 , and Nicole Willis ’93 ! If you plan to be back in St. John’s Wood sometime soon, please book your own alumni tour <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fcalendly.com%2fjulia_holzman-asl%2ftour%3fmonth%3d2024-12&srcid=56759037&srctid=1&erid=-1155332371&trid=6605af5e-d5cf-4445-a813-a4053a607b74>.
We recently had a great visit from Emily Greenwald ’11 and her new fiancé, Jon Hofman. Emily and Jon, who live in New York, visited Emily’s old school on their first day of a surprise trip to London—and the pair got engaged at Primrose Hill mere hours before swinging by ASL! All the best to Emily and Jon as they embark on this exciting new chapter in their lives.
ASL enjoyed a very successful fall sports season, with boys junior varsity and varsity soccer teams taking gold at ISSTs hosted here in London. Alumni really showed up to support, and/or lead, the teams! Pictured here, from left: Coach Alex Caparros ’97 , Director of Athletics John Farmer ’97 (ASL 2012–present) , former coach Bob Carter (ASL 1969–2014) , coach Harry Nevins ’18, and Canons Park groundskeeper Dan Bingle (ASL 2008–present).
Nancy Wight ’65 , recently retired after a long career in neonatology, lives in San Diego—when she isn’t traveling the world! This year alone, Nancy’s travels have taken her to France and Spain to view prehistoric cave paintings, the Greek islands, coastal Turkey, Quito, and the Galapagos Islands (where she’s pictured here with her partner, Wulf).
Grace Ann Turnbeaugh, daughter of Emily Wasley ’00 and Corey Turnbeaugh, is pictured here at three months old, happily rocking her new ASL onesie! To request a onesie for your own little Eaglet, email alumni at asl.org <mailto:alumni at asl.org>.
Amanda Weingarten ’01 and Ash Chandler Weingarten were married in Big Sky, Montana, this past March! The pair reside in New York City, where Amanda recently launched Seven Cranes Consulting—a global communications and fundraising consultancy firm for nonprofits.
Jill Kitchen ’94 and her family relocated to Washington, D.C., from Boulder, Colorado, over the summer. Jill is a published writer and poet.
Jacques Soenens ’89 and David Thomas ’74 have known each other for several years through their mentorship work with business school students at Tulane, but it was only recently, over dinner in New Orleans, that they got to talking about their upbringings—and realized that they both attended ASL! They reminisced about the School and London, and shared fond memories of the late, legendary ASL coach–turned–athletics director John Lockwood (ASL 1967–2007).
In June, Evan Reilly ’12 moved back to London for a job with the Swedish construction and development company Skanska. Welcome home, Evan!
David Bonner ’63 is CEO of Regenevita, a biocellular medicine firm, and a leader at several other health-related companies. An academic and a founder of multiple start-ups, David lives in Austin, Texas, where he was named a founding member of the Academy of Distinguished Chemical Engineers in 2017!
Rondi Frey ’73 writes: “Hello to all my fellow ASL alumni from 1973! My husband, Eric, and I still reside in Connecticut and spend our time enjoying our five grandchildren, family and friends, as well as traveling and doing (some) work. Hard to believe that it is over 50 years since graduating from ASL. I still very much enjoy hearing from fellow alums. If you are ever in the area, please let us know <mailto:Rondilfrey at gmail.com>! We would love to connect!”
If a loved one, who is an ASL alum, parent of alumni, or former employee passes away, we appreciate your letting us know so that we can share the news in London Calling. Please email alumni at asl.org <mailto:alumni at asl.org>.

We grieve the 18 November 2024 passing of Janet Newkirk P ’05 ’12 , who served on the Board of Trustees from 1995 until 2007, and as a member of the ASL Foundation Board from 2007 until her death last month. Janet is survived by her husband, David Newkirk , and their two children, Edward ’05 and Alice ’12 , who write: “Janet lived a rich life defined by human connection and wide-ranging curiosity, with friends of all ages and backgrounds across multiple continents. She was known by everyone she met for her brilliant wit, wisdom, kindness, and loving spirit.” Janet was a loyal supporter of ASL’s work and a trusted advisor to the School for decades, and her loss will be felt deeply.
We mourn the loss of Ray Ruehl (ASL 1978–93) , an exceptionally talented and beloved former ASL art teacher. Ray passed away on 4 September 2024 surrounded by family. Jan Mikrut (ASL 1974–98) , who worked with him for many years, reports that “Ray always expected his students to do their best, and got excellent results.” Jan continues, “As a colleague and friend, he was the best. Ray was extremely bright, well educated and well traveled. He was inspiring on every level. He infused everything with his wry, witty sense of humor that always left one laughing.” Ray will be so missed.
We were very saddened to recently learn of the 17 May 2023 passing of Candace Dyal P ’07 ’09 , whose lifelong passions for sustainability, cultural diversity, and philanthropy were surpassed only by her love of her sons. Candace lived all over the US and in London over the course of her life, and enjoyed careers in sales, on Wall Street, in children’s clothing manufacturing, and finally, in real estate development, when she founded her own company.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Gary D’Amato ’74 passed away on 20 April 2023. Gary was a successful stockbroker for a number of years in Las Vegas, and spent the final years of his life in Portland, Oregon. Gary will be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence, passion for reading, and love of the Giants. Gary was predeceased by his sister Nina D’Amato ’77 , and leaves behind his sons, Sean and Kyle Larimer, his sister Lee Ann D’Amato ’78 , and his brother, Paul D’Amato ’77.

* Each year, the high school Social Justice Council holds Aequitas Day, an inspiring series of justice-oriented workshops and talks across the division. This year’s student organizers are looking for alumni speakers who can promote change and activism in the ASL student body. Might you, or someone you know, make a good speaker in February? Email alumni at asl.org <mailto:alunni at asl.org> if so!
