The results are in: ASL is rated “Outstanding”

Following an inspection from Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, we are pleased to share that ASL was rated as “outstanding”—the inspectorate’s highest rank—in every category. In their announcements to the community about Ofsted’s findings, Head of School Matt Horvat and ASL Board Chair Erin Roth P ’15 ’16 ’21 lauded employees, school leaders, parents and staff for this excellent result. “Ofsted has confirmed the positive work that has taken place at our school over the past two years,” Erin wrote. Well done, ASL!

Recap: London alumni social

In December, we welcomed 60+ alumni and teachers to our London alumni social held at the Warrington. Louisa Avery, Tony Bracht, Colin Bridgewater, Duncan Pringle and Matt Horvat mingled with former students who represented Classes 1970 to 2023. It was a great way to ring in the holiday season and celebrate our dear alma mater.

Former faculty focus: Doug Poggioli (ASL 1999-2019)

Mr. Poggioli spent nearly three decades as a storied math teacher, two of them at One Waverley Place. He has called suburban New York, Virginia Beach, Miami, London and a remote village in the south of France home; most recently, he and his husband have become North Carolinians. Some news from the Class of 2023: Elena Alexander is enjoying her first semester at Bowdoin College, possibly majoring in history. She has joined the crew club and an a cappella group. Io Kennaugh is studying the history of art at the Courtauld Institute, King's College London, where she now is studying. Evelyn Snizek is a freshman at Boston College and loving it.

With heavy hearts, we share the news that Chris Aghjayan ’76 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fshepherdfuneralhome.com%2ftribute%2fdetails%2f7065%2fChristopher-E-Aghjayan%2fobituary.html&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1> lost his battle with cancer on 7 September 2023. “I will always remember his sense of humor, love for his family and his friends, and his fierce loyalty for what was right,” wrote classmate Lisa (McDonough) O’Neill. “He will be greatly missed.”

Rodney O’Neil Evans ’75 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fobituaries.adn.com%2fadportal%2flistingView.html%3fid%3d6628&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1>, who attended ASL from 1971 to 1974, sadly succumbed to his long fight with cancer on 12 August 2023, age 65. A short time later, his mother, Phyllis Evans P ’75 ’78 ’87 , passed away in Paramus, New Jersey, on 31 October 2023. Rodney’s successful engineering career meant that he had the opportunity to live and work internationally in Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Norway, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia; he called Alaska home. Phyllis loved being an expat in London in the ’70s. The ASL community sends deepest condolences to Rodney and Phyllis’s loved ones, especially Janice (Evans) Phares ’78.

We sadly report that Phil Gist ’79 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.legacy.com%2fus%2fobituaries%2fdurangoherald%2fname%2fjames-gist-obituary%3fid%3d53574083&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1> died peacefully in his sleep on 9 November 2023 in Dickinson, Texas. He was 62. A dedicated police officer who recently retired as an assistant chief of police, Phil’s community honored him by declaring that 1 August would become “Asst. Chief Phil Gist Day” among the residents of Clear Lake Shores.

On 25 December 2023, alum parent Bill Granger P ’22 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nytimes.com%2f2023%2f12%2f28%2fdining%2fbill-granger-dead.html&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1> passed away from cancer at the age of 54. A beloved chef and restaurateur, Bill’s legacy will be sustained by numerous colleagues, foodies, friends and family, in particular Natalie P ’22 and children Edie, Inès and Bunny ’22.

Alumni parent Jim Heidebrecht P ’86 ’88 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fthomasmcafee.com%2fobituary%2fjames-keith-heidebrecht%2f&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1>, father of Brian ’86 and Bruce ’88 , passed away on 17 June 2023. Jim’s impressive career with Humble Oil, now ExxonMobil, brought his family to London and ASL in the 1980s. During his retirement, Jim volunteered his time to support numerous charities, his church and others in need. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jim’s loved ones.

We are very sorry to share the news that Josh Kramer ’74 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2feverloved.com%2flife-of%2fjosh-kramer%2fobituary%2f&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1> passed away on 27 November 2023. A respected member of the entertainment industry for nearly 50 years, Josh attended the Elton John concert that took place in ASL's gym during the spring of his senior year, a story he frequently recalled to friends and family. “He loved ASL,” remembered friend and alumni parent Rachel Horovitz P ’24 ’24.

Amy (Swinton) Lawrence ’73 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.grayfuneralhomes.com%2fobituaries%2famy-lawrence&srcid=52040767&srctid=1&erid=-1387033174&trid=068a2e9a-71cc-4fca-8047-97c05ce7d9b1>, who attended ASL from 1968 to 1971, passed away unexpectedly on 8 August 2023 at her home in Avenel, New Jersey. A devoted mother and wife, Amy cherished her teen years in London with her family. She will be sorely missed.

We are deeply saddened to share the sudden loss of Jon Mided ’83 in December 2023. Jon recently enjoyed a weekend with lifelong friends and ASL classmates in Tucson, Arizona. He will be deeply missed.
