MUSIC, COMEDY, DRAMA & POETRY AT #BOOKWEEK24
Our opening night on Saturday 2 March features a special poetry performance from PEN Pinter Prize winner and Sunday Times No1 bestseller Lemn Sissay (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/lemn-sissay-let-the-light-pour-in) as he joins us for the first time. The following evening our opening weekend concludes with a one-off tribute in conversation and song, Leonard Bernstein: Some Other Time (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/leonard-bernstein-some-other-time) with Radio 3's Petroc Trelawny joined by broadcaster Edward Seckerson and West End stars Christina Bianco & Julian Ovenden.
We celebrate two centenaries at the festival: marking what would have been Dannie Abse's 100th birthday, Jeremy Robson & Maureen Lipman (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/dannie-abse-centenary-celebration) are joined by family for readings of his poetry and prose; and a century after Franz Kafka's death, this year's specially commissioned production features a play reading and panel discussion (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/kafkas-trial-a-play-reading) . Our first-ever stand-up comedy night (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/a-night-of-comedy) stars Sol Bernstein, Bennett Arron, Rachel Creeger & Josh Howie. And a fitting finale to nine days of events comes on Sunday 10 March as singer Mark Glanville and pianist Marc Verter return after last year's acclaimed performance with Yiddish Winterreise: A Song Cycle (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/yiddish-winterreise) .

PINCHAS GOLDSCHMIDT: MOSCOW MEMOIRS,
KINGS PLACE, 7 MARCH, 7PM
>From the bleak Soviet Union and the historic renaissance of Judaism, to the current collapse of Russian society, Moscow’s chief rabbi for almost three decades was an eyewitness to history. Now exiled in Israel, Pinchas Goldschmidt’s tenure ended abruptly in 2022 when he spoke out against Putin’s war against Ukraine, resigned, and recommended that all Jews leave the country. His memoir tells of the flourishing of a Jewish community at the very heart of a land that for centuries was committed to its destruction. He sheds light on run-ins with secret service agents; the influence of oligarchs on the capital’s Jewish community; and local antisemitism always simmering beneath the surface. In conversation with veteran foreign correspondent and writer Adam LeBor. FIND OUT MORE & BOOK (https://jewishliteraryfoundation.co.uk/bookweek/24/event/pinchas-goldschmidt)

WHAT IS JEWISH HISTORY FOR? KINGS PLACE, 3 MARCH, 11AM
Few of us study Jewish history, yet so many of us would like to know more. Where and how is Jewish History to be taught? Most teaching of Jewish History in Europe and the United States concentrates on calamities - such as the pogroms and the Shoah - and these are often taught without context. How might we teach Jewish history better, not only to Jewish students, but as part of the shared school curriculum? Can Jewish History become part of a diverse and inclusive general history curriculum? Historians Jonathan Brent, Miri Rubin and Simon Schama discuss with educator and Etgar co-founder Adam Taub.
