CELEBRATING NORTH PADDINGTON: Yesterday, Grand Junction celebrated our North Paddington Community Day, filled with fun and community-building spirit. The event featured residents, key organisation stakeholders, councillors and council officers, showcasing the achievements of the North Paddington Programme. Established to support the wards of Westbourne, Harrow Road, and Queen’s Park, the programme is now marking its first anniversary.

MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR RESIDENTS: During the Cabinet meeting on 15 July, there were discussions about the North Paddington Programme and how we plan to tackle inequalities with a community-driven approach. This project has already made a real difference – we have invested over £350k in local facilities, and Cabinet has now approved a £10 million fund for the next set of projects. This paves the way for the next three years, with a programme of work that supports employment opportunities, creates new green areas, improves the look of high streets, provides new community centres and funds a range of local community organisations across Westbourne, Harrow Road and Queen’s Park.

HOW WE ARE DELIVERING A FAIRER WESTMINSTER: We want to build a Fairer Westminster that supports and celebrates its communities. Below are just some of the highlights from the work we have been doing so far:
* 690 cases where homelessness has been prevented
* 681 residents have been supported into training and skills opportunities
* 79% of residents agree the council is making their local area a better place
* 17.5% reduction in council carbon emissions
* 197 affordable housing units by the end of 2023/24
We are proud of what we have achieved so far, but we know there is still a lot more we want and need to do, and ways of working that can be improved. Most importantly, we will continue to consider and reflect your priorities – our residents and businesses – as we build a Fairer Westminster together.

HELPING OUR SMALLER BUSINESSES: Meanwhile On (https://westminster.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a50c8b0dd980669ef713b4cca&id=6960dbf33d&e=7e37558eca) is a supportive platform for emerging brands, entrepreneurs and creatives to launch stores. By transforming shops that are currently empty or with an undesirable use, we are bringing new concepts and experiences to add vibrancy to high streets while incubating brands that have the potential to become long-term occupiers.

GIVING OUR RESIDENTS FAIRER HOUSING: Properties standing empty for long periods deny others the chance to rent. This week, Leader of the Council, Cllr Adam Hug, joined our housing teams in a city-wide day of action where we found 30 empty properties to investigate and 153 shared houses that need safety checks.

OPERATION SYNC: ‘Operation Sync’ took place on 13 July to combat the issues with pedicabs, e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds and unlicensed street trading in Westminster. Home Office Immigration and Westminster City Council City Inspectors worked together with 150 police officers on the operation. With positive results, we will continue to work together to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors.
