October 2024

The Class of 1974 reunites to celebrate 50 years since graduation!

The Class of 1974—along with former faculty members, and friends from the Classes of ’73 and ’75—leaned into the big 5-0, London-style. They cruised on the Thames, caught a West End show, and got up to speed on the 2024 pub scene. On 26 September, the group came home to One Waverley Place for a tour of campus, conversations with students, faculty and Head of School Matt Horvat, and an all-around great time. Read more about the reunion! <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2fabout%2fnews-publications-and-speakers%2fnews-and-blogs%2fnews-post%2f%7eboard%2fnews-stories%2fpost%2fclass-of-1974-celebrates-golden-reunion-at-asl&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f>

Calling all ’73, ’74 and ’75 alumni: Did you miss this reunion? We missed you too. But fear not! It’s never too late to get involved. You can contribute <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2fgiving%2fhow-to-give%2famerican-school-in-london-foundation%2f1970s-reunion-giving-form&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> to your class’s reunion gift to the ASL Foundation in support of financial aid! Contact alumni at asl.org <mailto:alumni at asl.org> with any questions.

Back to school

School is back in session at One Waverley Place! This year, our hallways are full with the laughter and learning of 1,440 students, who represent 72 countries and speak 66 languages! We’ve had a busy and joyful start of school—from our classic all-school assembly <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.instagram.com%2fp%2fC_iOF9at2AM%2f%3fimg_index%3d1&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> to kick off the year, to senior sunrise <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.instagram.com%2fp%2fC_X63TjNDzu%2f&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> on Primrose Hill, to a festive Fallfest <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fvimeo.com%2f1007997582%2fc6017ed235&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> at Canons Park just as an autumnal chill begins to descend on London. There’s been lots of Eagle activity spotted across St. John’s Wood and beyond as the 2024–25 academic year gets underway.

Michaela Towfighi ’18 is named New Hampshire journalist of the year!

Michaela started her journalism career as a Scroll reporter in middle school, and graduated from ASL six years later as the Standard’s editor-in-chief for print. Now a Report for America fellow at the Concord Monitor, Michaela was named New Hampshire journalist of the year in June, and won first place awards in two reporting categories. Just over two years out of college, Michaela has done it all—and learned a lot by doing—in her small, New England newsroom. “It’s like being thrown to the wolves… In a good way,” Michaela says. Read <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2fabout%2fnews-publications-and-speakers%2fnews-and-blogs%2fnews-post%2f%7eboard%2fnews-stories%2fpost%2fmichaela-towfighi-18&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> all about Michaela’s journalism career at—and since!—ASL.

Grade 3 throwbacks
Sometimes, a class just clicks—and that was certainly the case for Lesley Yeo’s 2010–11 Grade 3 group. Ms. Yeo, beloved classroom teacher by day and also a masterful photographer, commemorated the stellar year with a series of fun group shots throughout. But they didn’t stop there: starting in Grade 5, the group reunited year after year, until the pandemic made it impossible in 2020—when the cohort graduated. Most of the reunion photos <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fbit.ly%2f4el6e7A&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> were composed as closely as possible to the original 2010 class picture, so that as friends and classmates moved away, the photos left space for their absences.

Alumni family feature: The Pringles

This year, we have 33 ASL alumni who came back for more—by sending their own kids to their alma mater! We hope to feature one of our wonderful alumni families in each edition of London Calling this school year. Email alumni at asl.org if you and your family fit the bill and are willing to be featured!

Up first… Meet the Pringles! <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2falumni%2falumni-news%2ffamilyfeature&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f>

Notes from Bruce House Society

October is Free Will Month in the UK! ASL partners with Farewill <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2ffarewill.com%2f&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f>, a straightforward estate planning tool that can help you write a will in about 30 minutes. As an ASL alum (or parent of an alum!), you can use this service for free. You don’t have to include a gift to ASL in your will—but after your loved ones have been provided for, a legacy gift to ASL would be a deeply meaningful way to help sustain the School’s work for years to come.

For classmates Bob Fish ’81 and Michelle (Cox) Fish ’81 <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2fgiving%2fplanned-giving%2ftestimonials&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f>, happily married for 17 years, the decision to leave a gift in their will to ASL was a special way to say thanks to the alma mater that gave them so much. “We share a curiosity about the world and a desire to both see as much of it as possible, and to do as much good in it as we can. All of that was first ignited during our years at ASL,” says Michelle. “We hope our gift will enable future generations to have that same world-shaking experience that we did.”

We love hearing what you're up to! Submit your own class notes here <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.asl.org%2falumni%2fget-in-touch%2fclass-notes&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f>, or email alumni at asl.org <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2falumni%40asl.org&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> to keep us in the loop.

Major congratulations to Emily Wasley ’00 and Corey Turnbeaugh, who were married in a beautiful Carmel, California wedding in March, and welcomed their first child, Grace Ann Turnbeaugh, in August. Emily and Corey celebrated their wedding with family and friends, including Emily’s ASL classmates Courtney Nielson ’00 (third from left) and Annamarie (Brown) Windham ’99 (third from right).

We’ve loved welcoming Eagles of all ages back to campus during their end-of-summer travels! Visitors this August and September included Dale Tyson ’73, Tina Nunes ’75, Dan Croghan ’78, Richard Smith ’88, Brian (ASL 1990–92) and Sue Lehmann P ’00 ’02, Ali (Nelson) Bowers ’92, Natalia (King) Ciriaco ’92, Michael Collins ’91, John Fuller ’01, Jonathan Franklin ’03, Hailie Gill ’15, Ruchi Ahuja ’17, Heidi Black P ’20 ’23 and Kate Black ’20 , and Blake Bretthauer ’24 ! Will you be in London soon? Book <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fcalendly.com%2fjulia_holzman-asl%2ftour&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> an alumni tour of ASL today!

	* Todd Nelson ’74 recently published The Land Between the Rivers: Thoughts on Time and Place <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2fwww.amazon.co.uk%2fLand-Between-Rivers-Thoughts-Place-ebook%2fdp%2fB0D9RJ3QD9&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f>. While his previously published essay collection Cold Spell <https://bbox.blackbaudhosting.com/webforms/service/page.redir?target=https%3a%2f%2famzn.eu%2fd%2fc0GsqKy&srcid=55474216&srctid=1&erid=-1214912133&trid=387152a4-76b5-4f7b-8e00-fd1106ada04f> is focused largely on Maine’s Castine peninsula, The Land Between the Rivers “ranges a little more broadly,” Nelson says, “with essays including my time in London and enduring friendships with fellow ASL pals Marc Bernard and Jeff Preston—we’re in daily contact across the years.”
	* Thomas Fried ’81 has retired from a career in teaching, and now lives in the Hamptons.
	* In July, DC Greens, a leading Washington, DC, nonprofit dedicated to advancing health equity by building a more just food system in the city, named Eric Angel ’85 as its new executive director.
	* Phil Blane ’88 is general manager of the beautiful Hotel Heron in Alexandria, Virginia, which opened its doors in June and was featured in Travel + Leisure.
	* In August, Sandy (Kwitnieski) Garber ’89 arrived on campus at James Madison University in Virginia to help her daughter, Dakota, move into her sophomore year apartment—and was happily surprised to learn that her daughter’s roommate, Alexis Lambropoulos ’22 , had also attended ASL. Only 33 years after she did! Alexis is a junior at JMU, where she studies communications with a health concentration and participates in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Alexis’s sister, Athena ’20 , also took part in ROTC in her time at JMU, and majored in intelligence analysis. She is currently a commissioned second lieutenant in the US Army.
	* Andy Vanica ’96 lives in Bozeman, Montana, and works at ACTIVE Network to manage and sell software to ski resorts. He had a great time in London with his family this summer, and reports that his 9- and 11-year-old children loved attending the ASL Summer Program. “Seeing the developments of ASL 30 years later is truly remarkable,” Andy remarks. “As I grow older and reflect on certain life experiences, I realize now how lucky I was to attend ASL for three years. Reconnecting with past ASL classmates and alumni is also great.”
	* Sourna Daneshvar ’18 lives in New York, where he works for the NBA. Back in London visiting family and friends for a week in September, he met up with former Standard advisor Shannon Miller (ASL 2004–19) and Scroll advisor Colin Bridgewater (ASL 2000–present) and reminisced about his ASL student journalism days.

Eric Gilliland ’80 passed away on 1 September 2024 after a battle with cancer. A celebrated comedian and screenwriter known for his work on Roseanne, Living Dolls, The Wonder Years, Doogie Howser, M.D., That ’70s Show and My Boys, Eric will be remembered fondly by his friends and classmates for his incredible spirit, openness and enduring sense of humor.

We are saddened to share that Robin (Hawes) Scoffield ’77 passed away on 10 May 2024. A lifelong adventurer, artist and writer, Robin spent her childhood all over the world, moving from the US, to Venezuela, to Mexico, to Japan, to London, where she graduated from ASL. She will be deeply missed

We mourn the loss of Sally Marlow (ASL 1964–95) P ’76 ’79. A longtime ASL teacher across the visual arts, history and English departments, Sally also served as head of the lower school during her tenure. After her three decades at ASL, Sally continued to lead an artistic and active life, full of travel, sports and gardening. In retirement, Sally and her late husband, Tony Marlow (ASL 1964–1996), moved from Hampstead to Suffolk, where they enjoyed the peace and quiet and spending time with family.
