RESIDENTS DAZZLE JUDGES AT DANCE WESTMINSTER: This week, 10 amazing people with disabilities wowed the crowd at the Dance Westminster final at Porchester Hall! The Strictly Come Dancing-style competition offers free dance workshops where participants learn fun routines. This year, 100 disabled dancers joined the workshops, and after auditions, 10 finalists were chosen to compete for the top spots. Judged by the fabulous Wayne Sleep OBE, Angela Rippon CBE, and Kai Widdrington, finalists – aged 13 to 84 – lit up the stage with Latin, Bollywood, Ballroom, and Hip Hop dances.

After an incredible showcase of talent, the winner of this year’s Dance Westminster was Guy Lansquiot (57), who has a learning disability. Guy, and professional dance partner Georgia, received a score of 10 from each judge for his energetic Latin style dance to Buckcherry’s “Let’s Get Wild”. Guy said: “I wasn’t expecting that. I did my best you know, dancing for the past three or four years at Moberly (Sports Centre). I was a little bit nervous. When all the tens came out from the judges I was surprised, and I didn’t realise they (had) call(ed) out my name for that.”

The Audience Choice was awarded to Jacob Hassan (83), who has dementia and uses a walking frame. Jacob said: “It’s infectious. I love dancing. Ever since I was a kid the same thing happened. At home we had gurus, gurus that come together but the best people to learn dancing from are the kids. They have all sort of style.”

NO PLACE FOR HATE IN WESTMINSTER: This week marks National Hate Crime Awareness Week, which aims to eliminate hate crimes and incidents. Founded by Mark Healy, in memory of the victims of the London Nail Bomb attacks in 1999, which targeted LGBTQ+, Black and Asian communities, the week encourages those that experience or witness hate crimes to report it.

For the last three years, the Lord Mayor of Westminster has invited community members to reflect and commemorate victims, hearing from those that have experienced hate crimes in Westminster. Having reflected with members of the East Asian community and the South Asian community in previous years, this year focused on the experiences of the LGBTQ+ and Trans community. Hate towards any community in Westminster will not be tolerated. By working together to report it, we can continue to make Westminster a safe place to live, work and visit.

The Leader of Westminster City Council, Cllr Adam Hug, issued a statement for National Hate Crime Awareness Week, stressing solidarity with communities impacted by hate crimes. Which you can read here (https://westminster.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a50c8b0dd980669ef713b4cca&id=94bfda3e60&e=7e37558eca) .
