CELEBRATE BIODIVERSITY AND WIN LONDON ZOO TICKETS: It’s been a year since we declared an ecological emergency here and to recognise this we’re launching our Greening and Biodiversity Strategy. We’ve brought together all the incredible work happening across Westminster to enhance nature and green spaces, while highlighting why protecting and improving biodiversity is so important for our planet and for our own mental and physical health.

To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with London Zoo to offer four tickets to whoever captures the best photo of biodiversity in Westminster (https://westminster.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a50c8b0dd980669ef713b4cca&id=bc4fd567ad&e=7e37558eca) ! GREENER SCHOOLS: The Schools’ Clean Air Fund offers funding for nurseries and schools in Westminster to invest up to £14,000 towards air quality improvements. This money can be used towards implementing air quality monitors, solar panels and other green infrastructure, as well as unique ways that could improve air quality around your child’s school.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE MEASURE RE-LAUNCH: We want to showcase the steps we’ve taken to deliver a Fairer Environment across our city. The EJM maps environmental factors such as air pollution, green space and access to active travel, showing the projects we’ve delivered. Each step takes us towards making Westminster a cleaner, greener, healthier place to live and work.

OXFORD STREET UPDATE: The Leader of the Council, Adam Hug, has written to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, responding to their new plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street. RESIDENTS’ QUESTIONS ANSWERED: This week Westminster residents once again had their say at Full Council, asking questions about the issues that matter to them. Questions ranged from cyclists to protecting historic buildings. Regent’s Park resident, Sam (pictured here), asked councillors and cabinet members about plans for waste collections on his street.

THE MARATHON MAYOR GETS WESTMINSTER CHILDREN ON THE MOVE: A visit to St Joseph’s Catholic primary school in Maida Vale turned into a mid-morning jog as the Lord Mayor, Cllr Robert Rigby, joined in with local children for an exercise class as part of his campaign to support fitness and activity among younger children. Runners will also see the Lord Mayor on the starting line this weekend outside Buckingham Palace as he lowers the starter’s flag for waves of competitors taking place in Saturdays’ Westminster Mile event.

A NEW HOUSING OFFICE IN SOHO: Our newest housing office will open in Soho later this month. The Housing Service Centre, based at 60-62 Broadwick Street, will allow residents to speak face-to-face with housing officers about anything from repairs to support needs to accessing cost of living support. To mark the opening, we would be delighted if you could join officers and councillors on Monday 30 September from 9.30am. The opening of the Soho Housing Centre adds to the seven existing housing offices across the city which are open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Held in the heart of London, the Vitality Westminster Mile takes place on a spectacular course that starts on The Mall and finishes in front of Buckingham Palace. We’re expanding the successful School Streets Programme to five more schools in Westminster, creating safer, traffic-free spaces for children during drop-off and pick-up times. YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH DAY: Yesterday was Youth Mental Health Day and we’re pleased to announce that we’re continuing to fund the amazing Youth Mental Health Workers program, run by BWW Mind (https://westminster.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a50c8b0dd980669ef713b4cca&id=0ac55d0aea&e=7e37558eca) . Since its launch, these dedicated youth workers have supported 950 young people in Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea, including 80 group workshops tackling topics like anxiety, toxic masculinity and relationships. With increased support beyond school settings, we’re committed to continuing to improve mental wellbeing for children and young people.

MEASLES AND MMR: Measles cases are still high in London, and may get worse now that children are back at school. Measles can be very serious. One in four children who catch measles could end up in hospital. Two doses of the MMR vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family. If you need to check if your child is up to date or you have questions about the vaccine, talk to your GP.
