Here's how you can apply it to your child's studying
We all know the agony of trying to get your youngsters to revise.
While many students prefer creative tasks, revision itself can be creative! The CODE Education's revision handbook offers tips on supporting revision in a creative way. Scroll for a sneak peek...
1: Create a motivational poster
Whether their focus is University, a dream job or staying on top of their productivity in general, then this is a great method. Let them decide on what to include and put this up this will also help them to remember you are on the same team and are doing this to keep doors wide open for them. Fun ways to do this might be by creating a collage, a painting or even just printing one particular image and sticking it up!
2: Develop a fun & creative timetable
Evidence has shown that those who schedule in their ‘fun’ activities to their revision timetables are more likely to succeed. Sit down with your teen and allow them to schedule this in so that their timetable becomes achievable and they do not burn out. They are much more likely to stick to it if they know something fun will happen at the end of the day.
3: Help them create a memory palace
This is a wonderful technique to help you remember facts for an upcoming test. This can be done mentally or written down using the following steps:
Picture a place you know well: your home or a journey you take regularly.
Split the content you’re trying to remember up into several sections.
In your mind, place those images along the points in the path of the journey.
Practice this journey, picturing the images – even walk the path.
4: Create colourful revision posters with them
Research has shown that dual coding, a fancy phrase that really just means adding images to your work, is one of the best ways to help you learn. Adding doodles (the weirder the better) to revision posters as well as colours, acronyms and acrostics are both creative and an evidence based method to retain more information.
5: Make self-care fun!
Use tools like a self care menu or a diagram of their room to put them into the driving seat and to begin to think creatively of how they may like to work!! Ordering stationary and other colour revision tools can also be a great way to inspire creativity.
6: Be aware of hormones
For those with daughters remember that hormonal changes will largely influence their ability to be creative. Perhaps look at completing tasks during days 6-14 (Follicular phase) when creativity is at an all time high! This is a wonderful time to write plans for any essays, create revision resources (mind maps, flashcards) as well as design your revision timetables.
