HELPING YOU STAY WARM, WELL AND CONNECTED THIS WINTER: Winter can be a difficult time of year for many, particularly with the added pressure of energy bills and high food costs. We know that these challenges are affecting households across Westminster, and no one should feel like they have to face them alone.

We’re working closely with local charities, voluntary groups and community organisations to provide support throughout the colder months, including advice on money or benefits, help managing energy costs, or simply a safe and friendly community space to spend time with others.

WARM COMMUNITY SPACES AND ACTIVITIES: A number of community venues across Westminster are offering free meals, activities and welcoming social spaces throughout the winter. These spaces provide warmth, connection and support for anyone who needs it. Libraries are also open to anyone needing a warm, safe and friendly space. Drop in for a hot drink, activities, and the company of neighbours.

DORIS THE DOG DETECTIVE SNIFFS OUT SUSPECT CIGARETTES: A sharp-nosed Labrador called Doris has played a key role in uncovering illegal cigarettes worth more than £8,000 in a series of raids carried out by council officers and police. The three-year-old Labrador – a former police dog – was used on a visit to two shops on Edgware Road. At one address, 500 packets of illegal cigarettes with a retail value of £8,250 was uncovered, along with 150 single use vapes which are now illegal.

WESTWAY MURAL UNVEILED: Major public realm improvements have been completed in Westbourne, including enhanced canalside areas at Westbourne Green and a new 120-metre mural beneath the Westway. Funded with the help of the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund, the works transform an underused stretch of the Grand Union Canal into an accessible, green and welcoming route with improved lighting, new planting, community-designed play spaces, and upgraded paths. Check out the transformation with our before and after photos above!

WESTMINSTER AFTER DARK: Our Westminster After Dark Strategy will help make the city more lively, safe and welcoming after dark. The 15-year plan aims to support Westminster’s thriving hospitality and entertainment scene while creating new areas for evening and late-night activity across the city. ACTIVEWESTMINSTER AWARDS – Celebrating our Active Heroes! Westminster’s most inspiring individuals and communities were honoured at a glittering celebration last week at Porchester Hall, marking another incredible year. This year saw an overwhelming 400+ nominations from residents, with winners recognised across categories including Sports Personality of the Year and the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Unsung Hero Award, held in memory of Mariam Sabir.

The evening’s most prestigious award, the ActiveWestminster Sports Ambassador Award, went to local star Tin-Tin Ho. The table tennis champion has represented Westminster and England on the global stage, cementing her status as the nation’s greatest female player after claiming her seventh Senior Women’s National Singles Championship earlier this year.

GUESS WHO’S BACK? It doesn’t quite feel like Christmas until the spruce in Trafalgar Square has its lights on, and the wait is almost over – the tree is on its way to Trafalgar Square for the light switch-on ceremony on Thursday 4 December. This year, our national tree-sure is being transported by an electric truck from Oslo, and when it arrives off the cargo vessel to Trafalgar Square, reducing CO₂ emissions and making the tradition even more sustainable than last year. And even more exciting news (can today get any better!?), the tree has branched out and can now be found on Instagram and TikTok as well as X.
