WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP OUR STREETS SAFE: Westminster City Council Leader Adam Hug and deputy Cllr Aicha Less yesterday joined members of the new PACT team, set up to combat anti-social behaviour, on a patrol around Church Street, Broadley Green Gardens, City of London College and Hall Place estate. The team – which is supported by a nine-strong Metropolitan Police team funded by the council – talked to residents about issues ranging from drug use to fly tipping and other anti-social behaviour. Earlier in the day, police officers with the PACT team made two arrests – demonstrating the real impact the new combined force will make.

This week, we joined partners from the Metropolitan Police, Heart of London, My Local Bobby and the Safer Business Network to carry out a joint deployment across the West End, Chinatown and Covent Garden. The team made an arrest, issued warnings for cycling on the public highway, carried out drug searches, supported vulnerable individuals and provided crime prevention advice to local businesses. This partnership approach helps us maintain cleaner, safer and more welcoming streets for residents, local businesses and visitors.

A HEALTHY START TO THE DAY: Seven Westminster primary schools have been selected as part of a national government scheme to offer free breakfast clubs for pupils. Cllr Hug joined youngsters at St Mary Magdalene and St Stephen’s CE Primary School for breakfast to see how vibrant and ready the children are at the startof the day after a proper meal. “In January 2023, Westminster City Council was one of the first local authorities in the UK to launch its free lunch offer in primary schools to help families struggling with the cost of living crisis,’ he says. “With the help of funding from the council and the Mayor of London, we now provide free school lunches for all Westminster children aged 3 to 14.”

Part of Westminster’s wider public art programme, the sculpture created by British artist Paul Vanston is illuminated at night thanks to the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy funding. REGENT STREET, HAYMARKET AND PICCADILLY CIRCUS PLANS MOVE FORWARD: We’ve formally recommended that the Regent Street, Haymarket and Piccadilly Circus public realm programme progresses to the next stage of design, following a public consultation held last summer. Around 5,000 people shared their views during the second round of engagement, making it the largest response to any public realm project in Westminster to date. The programme is also expected to support local businesses and the 94,000 jobs they generate, helping to secure the long-term vitality of this important economic hub in central London. Overall, 60% of participants supported the proposals, with support rising to 62% for increasing pedestrian space at Piccadilly Circus. The final designs will be presented for consultation in summer 2026.

DON’T WIPE AWAY THE HIDDEN SIGNS: The NHS is encouraging those who have been sent an NHS bowel cancer screening kit to complete the test. Did you know that the bowel cancer screening kit could save your life? Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, and the earlier it is found the more treatable it’s likely to be. The free test detects signs of cancer before you notice anything wrong. The kit can be completed in the privacy of your own bathroom; a few simple steps and a tiny sample is all it takes. If you’re sent a bowel cancer screening kit, complete and return your bowel test kit. It could save your life.
