We’ve had a brilliant start to our season of summer tours, with a visit to the Egyptian collection at the British Museum and a deep-dive into Jewish records at the National Archives.

** Hamas and its Two Million Hostages: with Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib

Gazan writer Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib joins us to discuss his Jewish Quarterly essay. He'll chart Hamas's rise and repressive rule, reflecting on his and his family's experiences, and will discuss how the group's leadership sacrificed the people of Gaza - offering crucial insights into Hamas's future, and that of the Palestinian people, after its devastating war with Israel.

Taking place online at 5pm BST on 29 July, in partnership with the Jewish Quarterly and Lockdown University.

This month we’ve got a special treat. Not only are we sharing the first story from Etgar Keret’s wonderfully absurd collection of short stories  - you can also read his new story that he thinks you’ll particularly enjoy, called Crab Soup.

“The man with the baseball cap sitting at the café in the heart of the jungle is writing a short story. The barefoot waiter staring at him doesn’t know that the man is writing a story. As far as he’s concerned, it could be an email to his accountant, or a message to his wife, or even a heartfelt letter to his ex about how all those years they were together he’d never really felt loved or desired and how only here, surrounded by seagulls and crabs and monkeys, had he finally understood that he was one with nature.

But I know. I know with absolute certainty that this man is writing a story. Story-typing is different from email-typing: it’s a bit like a wave, mounting and mounting until it finally crashes, and that’s when you take a sip of coffee, a drag on your cigarette, and go back to typing another wave. Now, for example, the man in the baseball cap is stuck. Something’s happened in his story, something he hadn’t predicted when he started writing, something serious, and now he’s unclear where the story’s supposed to take him.”
