GOVERNMENT CUTS AND COUNCIL TAX – HAVE YOUR SAY ON WHAT MATTERS TO YOU: The UK Government is cutting Westminster’s funding by almost 50% over the next four years. This means the council will lose £100m in government funding to deliver local services. Combined with an expected rise in costs, demand and inflation, this cut to government funding currently leaves us with an estimated £160m budget gap. If Westminster does not make any changes to its spending, Council Tax would need to increase by 200% to close the gap.
Difficult choices lie ahead, but before any decisions are made, we want to hear from you about the services you value most. Your answers will help inform the final budget choices for 2027/2028 which will be decided by the council.

STAY SAFE IN THE HEAT: With hot weather expected, remember to take care of yourself and those around you. Stay hydrated, keep cool where possible, and check in on anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat. The dry conditions also increase the risk of grass fires. Please take extra care in parks and open spaces by avoiding disposable barbecues, disposing of cigarettes safely, and taking litter home, especially glass bottles. Small actions can help protect our green spaces, wildlife and communities.

LORD MAYOR INVITES ARTISTS TO CAPTURE THE CITY’S DIVERSITY: Following the fantastic response to last year’s art competition, Lord Mayor Karen Scarborough is delighted to bring the contest back for another year. This year’s theme, ‘Many Cultures, One City’, invites artists of all ages to celebrate Westminster’s rich diversity – from its cultures, communities and stories to the creativity that brings the city to life. The winning artworks will be proudly displayed in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at City Hall. The competition is open to everyone who lives, works or studies in Westminster and closes on 7 September.

COMMUNITY MATTERS – MAKE SURE EVERY VOICE IS HEARD: We’re supporting the National Conversation – a major UK-wide listening exercise asking people about their experiences of community life, run for the Independent Commission on Community and Cohesion. It’s about belonging – giving people a place where they feel connected, valued, and part of something bigger than themselves. But across the UK, that sense of belonging is harder to find. What’s working? What needs to change? What kind of community do you want? It takes just a few minutes, and your views will help shape a national report.
