Counterfeit goods such as hats and cigarettes being displayed

DON'T LET FAKE HAT SELLERS PULL THE WOOL OVER YOUR EYES: Nearly 200 suspected fake designer hats were among items seized by Westminster City Council trading standards officers when they visited a shop in Piccadilly. Acting on intelligence, the officers also impounded illegal cigarettes, cannabis-laced vapes and gummy sweets and illegal single-use vapes. The designer headgear involved fakes of famous labels including North Face; Stone Island; Louis Vuitton; Gucci; Canada Goose and Miu Miu. Other suspected fake items recovered include:
* 60 single use vapes.
* 46 packs of illicit cigarettes
* 4 cannabis products consisting of vapes and gummy sweets
* 241 Travel plug adapters
* 162 mobile phone charging cables
* 42 mobile phone accessories

Cllr Caroline Sargent, Westminster City Council’s Cabinet Member for Enforcement, said: “Our trading standards officers are on the streets to ensure that shoppers in Westminster get what they pay for. Fake designer goods inevitably prove a false bargain and are usually poorly made. As the lead on enforcement I am going to ensure we go up through the gears on both the scale and rate of these operations. Like many, I am tired of our streets being used by these emporiums of tat to sell knock-off goods and fakes. Collecting bin bags of vapes and fake hats is useful in disrupting unscrupulous traders and we will keep doing that. However, I will be working with other agencies like the Treasury to target the people at the top of the supply chain - they are the new targets."

CRACKING DOWN ON DOCKLESSS BIKES: With Tube strikes increasing demand for cycling across London, Westminster often sees a surge in abandoned dockless bikes left blocking pavements, taxi ranks and busy pedestrian routes. Westminster has more than 380 dedicated bike parking bays across the city. However, during strike periods these spaces can quickly become overcrowded as more people look for alternative ways to travel.

We've called on bike operators to do more to manage their fleets, while our City Inspectors have stepped up enforcement to keep streets safe, accessible and moving. These bikes were obstructing a taxi rank and blocking the pavement, creating difficulties for pedestrians and other road users. As a result, fines have been issued and operators were required to remove them as a matter of urgency.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF CARNABY STREET: Westminster City Council is supporting early engagement on potential public realm improvements for Carnaby Street. Initial ideas being explored aim to celebrate the street’s unique character while improving accessibility, greening and the pedestrian experience. At this stage, no decisions have been made, and feedback gathered through this developer-led engagement will help inform future design development ahead of a formal public consultation by the Council.
