REAL ACTION ON ROGUE PEDICAB RIDERS: A high visibility patrol involving Westminster City Council’s City Inspectors and the PACTT police officers funded by the council have been in action cracking down on rogue pedicab riders. Cllr Caroline Sargent, the cabinet member for enforcement, joined the team as they patrolled the West End. The police and council officers spoke to six pedicab riders gathered outside the Lyceum Theatre on issues ranging from vehicle safety to blaring music played from speakers. In the last eight months, we have issued nearly 600 fixed penalty notices, and four pedicab riders have been prosecuted this year for offences under the Control of Pollution Act resulting in overall fines of £3,275.
Cllr Sargent said: “The council has led the campaign for years to ensure riders are licensed, and it was a former Cities of London and Westminster MP, Nickie Aiken, who pushed an Act through Parliament in 2024 to make it happen. Visitors to the West End aren’t taken for a ride with rip-off fares and residents are fed up with loud music from these vehicles being played late into the night. It’s time now for Transport for London to implement the licensing scheme we have waited so long for.”

HIGH COURT INJUNCTION PUTS THE BRAKES ON STREET RACING IN CENTRAL LONDON FOLLOWING: Westminster City Council has secured a High Court injunction to stop anti-social drivers from racing, performing stunts and organising car meets in Knightsbridge and Belgravia, St James’s, Hyde Park and the West End. The order prohibits dangerous driving, including street racing, burnouts and doughnuts, as well as excessive engine revving between 6pm and 7am. Anyone who breaches the injunction could face large fines or seizure of assets. Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Enforcement, Cllr Caroline Sargent, said the ruling sends a clear message to those involved: “We have zero tolerance for this sort of behaviour. If you are looking to meet up and drive like this, the streets of Westminster are not the place for it.”

CHURCHILL GARDENS – GOSSIP OF THE WEEK: It seems someone got confused and thought the bottom of their block at Churchill Gardens was a rubbish dump. Spoiler alert: it isn’t. Fly-tipping might seem like a minor nuisance, but it can have a big impact on how our neighbourhoods look and feel. That’s why we’re taking a zero-tolerance approach to dumped rubbish, littering and graffiti, with enforcement teams targeting known hotspots and CCTV helping to catch offenders. The good news? This particular pile of unwanted ‘decor’ has now been cleared, and the area is looking much better already. If you spot fly-tipping, dumped bin bags, graffiti or litter in your area, don’t assume someone else will report it. Let us know as soon as possible so we can get it sorted quickly and keep Westminster looking its best.
Report issues in your area (https://westminster.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a50c8b0dd980669ef713b4cca&id=85fe3fac94&e=7e37558eca)

STAY SAFE IN THE HEAT: As temperatures rise and an Amber Alert is active, please follow key guidance to stay safe. Stay hydrated, apply high factor suncream, wear a hat and sunglasses and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours (11am to 3pm). To protect our rough sleepers, we are working around the clock alongside St Mungo’s, The Connection, and The Passage to deliver water, suncream, and access to cool spaces. If you are concerned about a rough sleeper, please make a report to StreetLink. If you see someone in urgent need of medical attention, call 999.
