With the darker days of winter now behind us, and Spring Break around the corner, we are headed into one of the most joyful periods of the school year. In 10 short weeks, our graduating class will become alumni of ASL, and all our other students will “move up” to the next grade. Across the School, we are preparing for both farewells and welcomes as current members of our community move on to new adventures and others join us for the first time. Such change is characteristic of international schools and one reason why it is both wonderful and important to have such a strong and supportive community.

The ICC Global Festival on Sunday was ASL at its best. Thank you to all of our fabulous volunteers who worked for months to make this year’s Festival so special. Under the leadership of coordinators Christina Christodoulou and Heidi Rosenwald, parents, students, faculty and staff contributed their time, talent and energy to bring us together to share the stories of our lives, and the food, dance, music and play of our cultures. The Global Festival was attended by more than 1,800 people celebrating the diversity of our school community.

As I wrote in my February letter, the School continues to work on all aspects of cultural competency to ensure that our students build the knowledge, skills and behaviors that will make them truly global citizens. The Ofsted inspection team visiting ASL last week noted the many ways in which they saw ASL’s mission and values come to life in classrooms across campus and in supportive and respectful relationships between community members. We have seen other numerous examples of our students living the ASL mission in the past weeks, including student activism in support of gun reform in the US, hosting the West London Model UN conference, and organizing the youngPower conference with students from other London schools. We were very pleased by the preliminary findings of the inspection; I look forward to sharing the final report with the entire community when it is released by Ofsted in a few weeks’ time.

Those with sharp eyes may have noted some recent changes to the organization of information on the ASL website. We have acted on parent feedback to make finding key information easier by moving important policies, when appropriate, to the public-facing side of the website. In particular, under the About/Safeguarding tabs, you will find policies related to health and safety, child protection, student behavior, and complaints and concerns. The Academics and Student Life tabs contain information by division. And as always, additional information that is only for current members of our community is available by logging into the parent portal.

And finally, I’d like to share some thoughts about how ASL handles student disciplinary matters that occasionally arise in school life. Our processes are guided by our disciplinary policies, the absolute need to ensure a safe and healthy school environment, and the necessity of fair and equitable treatment. Some disciplinary cases are simple, while others call for a longer investigation. ASL has a responsibility to be thorough, careful and fair; due process takes time. When incidents occur that impact a grade or division of the School more widely, we will share appropriate and relevant information to reinforce expectations and minimize rumors. At the same time, for obvious reasons, we will do our best to respect the confidentiality of those involved, and as such, there will be certain things that cannot be shared with the broader community. While every case is different, we periodically review and, when appropriate, revise our behavioral expectations and the clarity of possible consequences to ensure that expectations are clear and shared across the School. Fortunately, serious disciplinary issues at ASL are uncommon. However, when they do occur, we ask your understanding that we are bound together by our common interest to ensure a positive and healthy community environment.

I look forward to seeing you at the many annual celebrations ahead. In the meantime, enjoy a wonderful Spring Break!

Warm regards,
Robin

Robin Appleby
Head of School

The American School in London
One Waverley Place
London NW8 0NP

www.asl.org
