Scarlet fever is a contagious infection that mostly affects young children, and is easily treated with antibiotics. Symptoms include flu-like symptoms, a high temperature and swollen neck glands. A rash appears a few days later on the chest and abdomen, which feels like sandpaper and looks like sunburn. It does not appear on the face, but cheeks may be flushed. It is important to contact your GP if you suspect your child has scarlet fever, as antibiotics may be required.
