Fifth disease is caused by Parvovirus B19, which is evident by the "slapped cheek" rash. By the time the rash appears, individuals are no longer contagious. Fifth disease is usually mild and clears up without medical intervention. Public Health England does not recommend the automatic exclusion of students with fifth disease, however, if your child is feeling unwell with fever, s/he should stay home from school until recovered. Children and adults who are otherwise healthy are highly likely to recover completely. Treatment involves relieving symptoms such as a fever, headache, itching and joint pain. Pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems should avoid contact, and inform their health care provider if they believe they have been exposed.
