Our work is closely tied to the School’s annual themes and is always conducted in support of ASL’s mission, vision and values. Given the School’s focus on inclusivity, we thought it would be helpful to share an overview of the ongoing work around diversity, equity and inclusion.

Focus on inclusivity
The review process to develop ASL’s new mission statement led to the current focus on inclusivity across the School. ASL’s leadership, faculty and staff are committed to creating conditions where all feel accepted, safe, empowered, supported and affirmed. We are exploring aspects of inclusivity with adults in divisional faculty meetings and at all-school cultural competency meetings. Divisional principals and faculty work with students through grade-level and school assemblies and in the classroom. ASL has hosted a number of leading thinkers on aspects of diversity and inclusivity this fall, including Innovator-in-residence Kwame Alexander, noted activist and little person Sinéad Burke, transgender author and Barnard University professor Jennifer Finney Boylan, and author of Wonder and White Bird, R.J. Palacio. All of these experiences have been designed to demonstrate the positive impact of fuller inclusivity and to provoke discussion about how we can create a community in which every member has a full sense of belonging.

Leadership for diversity, equity and inclusion
The work of developing cultural competency in our students is a collective effort. Essential to this work is the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership team (DEIL). Since the fall of 2013, DEIL has participated in designing professional development, supporting affinity groups, and revising policies around recruitment, hiring and retention. The DEIL team works directly with the Head of School and the office of teaching and learning. This year the DEIL team is composed of Isa Olvera, Sean Ross, Jess Sepie and Rodney Yeoh. The team has been charged with creating a yearlong professional development program for all employees at ASL. The entire faculty and staff engage in quarterly workshops in which, through readings, case studies and guided discussions, we develop our understanding and knowledge of cultural competency and thus, our ability to lead this work with our students.

Additional professional development: Beyond Diversity
Since 2017, ASL has worked with educator, writer and consultant Glenn Singleton, a leader in diversity work across the United States. Glenn returns to ASL for the third time in December to offer Beyond Diversity, a powerful two-day seminar focused on understanding the impact of race on student learning. More than 140 faculty and staff have taken this course already, and another 70+ adults will take the course during our all-school professional development days on 16-17 December. We are excited to welcome Glenn Singleton back to ASL as his work has had a profound impact on our institution.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement Committee
ASL’s current diversity statement was written and adopted in 2012 at the request of the Board of Trustees, which has demonstrated strong commitment to the work of cultural competency across the last decade. Given our new ASL mission, it is now time to update this statement to more clearly reflect our ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. This work is being led by the DEI Statement Committee, which is co-chaired by Director of Teaching and Learning Robyn Chapel and Director of Student Support Services Belinda Nicholson. The members of the committee represent all areas of the School. The committee is conducting interviews with community focus groups and reviewing current diversity, equity and inclusion statements from schools around the world. The committee will draft a statement for feedback through a second round of focus groups to be held in January and early February. The committee will present a final draft of a new statement to ASL’s Board of Trustees by March 2020. The committee’s goal is to shape a statement that reflects ASL’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and guide future work around inclusivity as a core part of our mission to develop lifelong learners and courageous global citizens.

We would be happy to speak with you about any of these initiatives.
